The Rector’s Report

A few questions:
  • I’m trying to figure out what do do about the summer worship schedule. In the past several years we’ve stopped the evening service in the summer. In the past we’ve also moved the 10am to 9:15am. (We didn’t move the 10am service last summer.) The “thinking” behind moving the service to 9:15 was that it gave people a chance to come to church and then head off for the day (golf, beach, pool, etc.) We didn’t move it last year partly because people weren’t really going anywhere. My hunch is that people will ABSOLUTELY be going places this summer.
  • SO, do we move the 10am to 9.15am this summer?

  • I’ve had two (2) people express to me a desire for church to be outside—mostly for comfort/safety’s sake. One of the people didn’t realize how expensive the tent was that we had for Easter till I told them.
  1. Moving the 10am service outside is a TON of work. It really takes up the whole morning. It makes doing an 8am almost impossible. We’d have to move chairs, music equipment, a sound system, lay power cords, and lay ethernet cable to be able to broadcast it.
  1. The weather makes it so precarious. If it’s “blue skies” then “no problem.” And if it’s 100% chance of rain, that’s also not a problem, because we just move it inside. BUT, if there’s a threat of rain… a threat of thunderstorms… or if it’s blazing hot—it’s a miserable morning. (One Sunday morning we did outside last summer, the candles were literally melting onto the Altar it was so hot.)
  • I’d be happier with doing a smaller service (NOT 10am) in the Memorial Garden. We wouldn’t need to worry about complicated music, power, or even a sound system. It’s also shadier in the Garden, as there’s very little direct sunlight. BUT, I’m going to be gone 4-5 Saturday evenings this summer for vacation and weddings… I don’t think we can consistently offer Saturday (or even Sunday) evenings.
  • SO, do we do something outside this summer? Do we plan for a limited amount of outside services? Do we schedule a couple of services in Harry Dunham Park?
