CAMPUS > RHINO101: Rhino Basics

Rhinoceros is an all purpose CAD/CAM/Design software that is used by a wide variety of design professionals; Shoe designers, jewelry designers, sign makers, ship builders, architects (lots of architects), and even landscape architects.
In this course we cover the basics of working in Rhino. It’s a fun program with power and depth due to many of its accessible, affordable plugins, particularly Grasshopper (which has many of it’s own plugins (like Land Kit)).

If you don’t have Rhino, try their 90-day evaluation.

RHINO101 Module 1: Jumping into Rhino

Let’s get right into it. We talk about some of the basic geometry types and how we can draw and manipulate them. We also look at layers and solids and panels. Oh my.

This includes:
  • Curves - Straight, jagged, and curvy
  • Surfaces - Surfaces are like a grid of curves tied together with a perfect equation.
  • Changing Curves - Trimming, Joining, Controlling
  • Changing Surfaces - trimming and un-trimming
  • Meshes - Vertices and Faces, so simple, yet so complex.
  • Panels - UI elements that help us organize and manipulate different object and view properties.
  • Layers - Organizing and stylin’ your geometry.
  • Named Views - Save views for later
  • Solids - Polysurfaces that are closed. Can do other magic.
  • Rendering - A small trick: Raytracing with Cycles
