Is it feasible to provide a colourimetric definition here? It would seem that the notion of “gamut” is overloaded sufficiently to make it a challenging discussion.
IE: Which of the CIE aspects are the “ideal” here? “volume, area, or solid in a colour space” (http://eilv.cie.co.at/term/211)
The idea of volume is likely crucial, considering the noise issue brought up by Kevin at the low end, and the clear gamut clipping at the high end of the RRT / ODT chain.
