QUICK SOLUTIONS TO 99% OF YOUR ISSUES!

Problem: I cannot connect / my board is upside down / I cannot make a move / I’m a spectator! / I am not paired / my opponent is not here or not connected / I cannot see the pairings for the current round!

Solution: make sure you are using Chrome or Firefox / make sure you are logged in to Tornelo / change the browser to Chrome or Firefox / refresh the browser page holding down the shift key and pressing F5 / change the active player (see page 89 of the USER MANUAL) / if you are playing white, just play your first move and wait / if you are playing black, just wait and if your opponent does not arrive in five minutes use the “call the arbiter” button!  / Make sure the arbiter has actually published the pairings and then made them live. Ask the arbiter to “reset the lobby”, if he can.

Frequently Asked Questions (Players AND Arbiters!)

  • Use Chrome or Firefox browser and a desktop computer with a mouse and a separate camera for the best experience. DO NOT USE INTERNET EXPLORER OR EDGE

  • When can I start the game? - after you have checked in, you hang around for the pairings to be published (=you can see the pairings), then go live (=you can play), which will happen quite close to the round start time.  You get audible and visual notifications of both. Then you will see a button to take you to your board and I will know you are ready to play.  WAIT FOR THE ADVERTISED ROUND TIME.  Then you can start the game.

  • How do I offer a draw? - there is an offer draw button on the playing board. Do not abuse this! Otherwise use the call the arbiter button on the board.  The arbiter will declare a draw on a correct claim of threefold repetition or 50 move rule. Some events do this automatically.

  • We have King v King / repeated moves three times, made 50 moves and I want to claim a draw! - Tornelo does not always intervene, call the arbiter to the board (see below).

  • How do I call the Arbiter to the board? - All players will see a Call Arbiter button on their game. THIS WILL PAUSE THE CLOCKS. This will also alert the arbiter to players who have called for an arbiter. Players may also Cancel arbiter call if they are able to resolve the issue before the arbiter arrives.

  • How do I withdraw or ask for a bye? - Please tell the arbiter before leaving, via the Arbiters Room, or the appropriate Zoom call / WhatApp chat. You can take a bye via your tournament profile, but it is very useful to let the arbiter know that you are taking a bye as well, via Zoom or WhatsApp, etc.

  • What if I have a bye I didn’t ask for? - this is probably because there is an odd number of players, and you will get a point for the missed game. HOWEVER if you want a friendly game, let the arbiter know immediately and they may arrange a game.

  • What happens if I drop a piece on the wrong square? - In all forms of chess, online or over the board, if you let go of a piece you have to leave it on the square where you dropped it. That said, my advice is always use a mouse and a mouse mat. You can ALSO click and move OR drag and drop.

  • Do I have to be on camera throughout the event? - Yes please. There will always be an option to join a Zoom room just to chat, but in some events I run it is compulsory to be on screen throughout. Join via the link (big green button) on the Tornelo page for the topurnament.  You may also have to share your screen when requested.

  • What are the round times? - Rounds are advertised in advance, start on time and not before. Check the section information for timings.  If there is still an unfinished game in your section there may be a wait, but please be present for the start time or your clock will be started.!

  • Can I make the board larger? - not yet, only by making your screen or browser view larger (but you may lose some of the controls so be careful!
