Community platform development process
+Local Commons index

This diagram summarises a possible process to develop community communication and collaboration platforms, which we are exploring in several London localities. The core of the process is participatory mapping to create geographic and network maps of the local Social ecosystemsincluding the Social infrastructureof places, organisations and groups and activities.

Maps provide the means to profile the area and identify assets that may support projects and activities. Associated communication systems support conversations and storytelling, and provide tools for community organisers and anyone else wishing to use the system.

The process broadly works from left to right - but will not be linear. We've shown one feedback loop around outcomes (which will depend on the purpose of programme ... enhancing social connections, wellbeing etc).

The community platform model is part of our Networked Citywork to design support systems for civil society, which we are calling civic operating systems. We are also working with four London equalities networks on systems that will enhance their scope for collaboration and campaigning.

At present we are focussed on research and mapping processes, and discussing options for communication systems and how they might be used in community organising.

We will also introduce to the process the idea of a social action and discovery app, which we are developing with Outlandishand Coders and Founders. This would allow activists, community organisers and connectors to identify opportunity for action, and suggest more.

Research
Workshops and other investigations to show why we need change, what ideas we might have, where we need to look for help. Research:
  • What are the local needs and challenges
  • What ideas do people have to meet them
  • What are the local activities, places, people, groups and other resources that might help meet needs and address challenges
  • Who may develop projects
Project development
Develop plans for change. Project leaders use the ideas and assets to:
  • Develop project proposals
  • Recruit people to contribute
  • And seek more resources
Mapping
  • Profile people, groups, organisations - their characteristics, interests, assets
  • Identify locations
  • Invite people to show existing connections with other people, groups and resources
  • Create a spreadsheet that can feed geographic and network maps, and a catalogue or directory
  • Develop reports and other communications
Creating a Platform for collaboration
  • Create social spaces online and off for conversations and emerging collaborations
  • Use a range of digital and other tools to help with this, and to organise projects and tell stories
  • Facilitate discussion and make more connections
  • Use the maps to identify resources and opportunities, and manage updating of maps
See Platform tools matrixfor discussion of what communication tools may be appropriate
Roles
  • Local researchers
  • Workshop facilitiator
