Writing Assignment 07: Objectivity

We interact with objects on a daily basis. Similar to architecture, we simultaneously numb our senses and recognize the significance of objects in our lives (Botton, 12). Because of this duality, there are times when we do not acknowledge our environment or the objects we use.

This assignment is to mitigate that obliviousness, encourage curiosity, develop the ability to research, and improve your writing.

You will be randomly assigned an object that another student brings in. Spend the next few days documenting and writing about the object.

Questions or ideas to consider:
  • What is it?
  • What is the purpose of the object?
  • What is its perceived value?
  • Who made it?
  • What materials is it made of?
  • Does it have a function?
  • Describe the aesthetic qualities
  • How was it made?
  • Why?
  • What does it do?
  • Can you make something with it?

There is no length requirement. Remember that the purpose of this class is to approach design in a critical way. To study it. To observe. To document. Find something unexpected in the object you were assigned. Is there anything unusual about it or can you create something wildly unexpected with it? Can you repurpose it to make the viewer/reader/user more aware of the object and how it affects them?

Format
There is not a set way to write about this, document it, or design it. Throw out your preconceived ideas of what a writing assignment is and should be.

Part of the challenge of this assignment is to figure out how to write, document, photograph and/or compose your review. Do not look up what a review of an object looks like because it’s not what I’m looking for.
