Writing Assignment 06: Tour Guide

Tour Guide (n): a person who takes people on trips through an area and explains the interesting details about it.

Find an interesting place on campus (or somewhere else in Ruston). Write and photograph a simple tour guide to that place for a stranger who is coming to meet you for the first time.

There is no length requirement. The place does not necessarily have to be a building, but there should be some aspect of architecture present. Consider the design of the space. Observe formal qualities of the space like lines, colors, textures, etc.

Spend time in the space. Observe it from multiple angles. Above. Below. Inside. Outside. Sitting. Standing. Laying down. Spend a minute. Spend an hour. Spend a day. During sunrise. During sunset. How does light interact with the space? How does it feel? Find and show the best, most interesting details of the space.

Design
There is not a set way to design or lay this out. It must include images and text. Part of the challenge of this assignment is to figure out how to write, photograph and compose a tour guide. Do not look up what a tour guide looks like because it’s not what I’m looking for. I want you to find an interesting space, consider the space, write about the space, photograph the space, and present it to me/the stranger.

Remember this from the syllabus:

  • The assignments I give in this class are content-generating assignments first and foremost. They are to challenge you to think critically, form your own opinions and discover new perspectives on design. None of the assignments should necessarily be interpreted as design assignments, so prioritize your time investment in them accordingly.

Huckleberry Trails

Tucked within the woods not too far from campus is an otherworldly structure. The steel framework juxtaposed against the natural landscape feels like a spacecraft that has crash-landed. Traces of the extraterrestrial craft scatter the park. Steel meets concrete meets wood meets earth.
