Abstract

The IEEE Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society is a vibrant, multidisciplinary community that has a strong history of cultivating creative, proof-of-concept research in a diverse range of technical domains including nanotechnology, sensors, nonlinear systems, biosystems, neural systems, signal processing, communications, and cybersecurity, among others. Clearly hardware and algorithms are core tenets of CAS technical interests, but what often distinguishes CAS contributions are the novelty of applications and integration of approaches (such as bioinspired systems, co-design, embedded control, automation, multiphysics systems, human factors).

For decades, many improvements in circuits have resulted from improvements in materials science and process technology rather than design. In coming decades, however, the next generations of advances will arise from creativity and design – how those devices and circuits are understood, optimized, and leveraged in a variety of systems and applications, which is really at the heart of CAS technical interests and activities.

Thus, the CAS Society is well positioned as the IEEE Society of Innovation.  Our community has a unique opportunity to nurture small research-driven efforts and ideas that develop into inventions and innovations and fuel global economic development.  That is why innovation is highlighted as the theme for ISCAS 2017, the 50th International Symposium of Circuits and Systems.

Our focus on innovation also offers the opportunity to build stronger connections and provide increased value to the industrial members of the CAS Society and industrial delegates to ISCAS. To make ISCAS 2017 more accessible and appealing to industrial delegates, the technical program will feature sessions on innovation themes which are aligned with important industrial segments as well as invited talks by recognized technical leaders from industry. ISCAS 2017 will also expand and strengthen our educational mission to support the new paradigm of advancement of the art through circuits and systems fundamentals rather than materials progress.  Continuing education credits will be offered for participation in tutorials and technical sessions.
