Commentary

The Gospel according to Matthew (Greek: Κατά Μαθθαίον) is the first book of the New Testament and was written by Jesus' disciple Matthew. It contains an account of the birth of Jesus, his ministry and his death and resurrection and closes with Jesus' +Great Commission where he called his disciples to "go and make disciples of all nations."

A key purpose of Matthew appears to be to show that Jesus is the fulfilment of the Old Testament predictions concerning the Messiah. All of the Gospel writers quote from the Old Testament however Matthew has nine Old Testament proof-texts that are unique to his Gospel (Matthew 1:22-23; Matthew 2:15; Matthew 2:17-18; Matthew 2:23; Matthew 4:14-16; Matthew 8:17; Matthew 12:17-21; Matthew 13:35; Matthew 27:9-10).
