The Animal Decides to Move
After a fight I walked down to get the mail
Stopping at the brook by the road where
Years before
After the school bus,
I’d wade around in stilt grass and sow bugs.

A frog launches from my seat on the wall
Landing splat into the shallow water.
The surface glimmers with water skeeters
Jerking like gossamer bumper cars.
How do they move?

I look closer, trying to catch a kick
A motion or sign that would reveal impetus:
The animal decides to move.
What does instinct look like?

Why did I lose my temper
About margin width and type size
In the late morning
On a clear August day
When the truth is, I love you
