Letter from the Chair

By Dana Davis

As August comes to a close and we roll into September, the calendar is full of 99s events, Air shows, and Airport celebrations. The Southwest Section (SWS) of the Ninety-Nines will hold it’s annual fall meeting in Ventura, Sep. 28 - Oct. 1, 2023. We are slated to host the 2024 Fall Section Meeting, one year from now, so if you are able to attend any portion of the meeting (in person or virtually), it will help us to prepare for next year. Several chapter members have rooms reserved for the event with spare beds. Let me know if you would like to join us at the event. Hot on the heels of our Southwest Section meeting, The Ninety-Nines International, 2023 International Conference will be held October 27 – November 2, 2023 in Jordan.

We’ve had two beautiful days for the Oceano Airport Celebration ’23 and A Salute to Veterans. A variety of interesting airplanes were on display and a lot of traffic flew in and out of Oceano Airport during the event. It was great to be at the airport on a busy, beautiful, summer day. I was particularly interested in a Grumman Traveler (AA5) that was tied down. The Traveler is the precursor to the Grumman Cheetah (AA5A) that I fly. The Traveler is a four seat plane, like mine, but the original AA5 had a narrower horizontal stabilizer and a large vertical “fin” that are not present on my Cheetah. It was fun to see these changes up close. Thanks to all who showed up to help with the event.

Paso Robles Airport will host a 50th Anniversary Celebration on September 23, and it would be great if we could have a presence there to inspire women pilots. It should also be a good opportunity to check out all of the airport facilities in Paso Robles, as we consider it as our venue for the Fall 2024 SWS Meeting. The Reno Air Races are September 13-17th [the last one ever!, the Ed.] and we’ll host a booth at the Central Coast AirFest October 14-15th. Whew—lots of flying and hangar flying in our future!

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 6, at the Spirit of San Luis. We’ll gather at 5:30 for Social Time, and the meeting will start at 6:00. I’ll be sharing a few stories about what I learned when I landed at Rosecrans Memorial Airport (STJ), where we made an un-planned, weather related landing. I look forward to seeing you there.

See you at the airport,
Dana

Venture 99s Welcomed to SLO (August 16)

Grace, Liz Dinan and I had the pleasure of meeting up with the Ventura 99s Fly Out group on the same day Grace and Liz joined the monthly Flying Octogenarians for lunch at the Spirit. It was a beautiful day to visit with other pilots and 99s and swap stories and plans for upcoming events.
