Airplanes, thunderstorms, tornado warnings, oh my! What an amazing turnout of SLO 99s at OSH this year. I believe we had 7 of us there! People can describe how large of an event this is, but you don’t really understand until you get there. My campsite was one mile from the entrance to the event and I’m glad I brought my walking shoes, because I got a lot of steps in that week. Watching an airshow everyday was probably my favorite part. My least favorite part was the tornado warning. Wednesday, they closed down the whole event for the incoming thunderstorm. I went back to my campsite and prepared for the storm by taking everything out of my tent and prepared to sleep in the back of my car. Then everyone, including my uncle in CA, started texting me and told me EAA was opening a shelter. I saw a line of about 8 busses going through the campgrounds picking up campers and taking them to the EAA museum for shelter.
EAA museum in Oshkosh - shelter during the storm
When I looked up how severe the storm was going to be and saw the word tornado, I packed a bag and headed to the bus stop to go to the shelter. That movie“Night at the Museum”, comes to mind. I spent half the night in the museum, sitting on the ground with about 3,000 others waiting out the storm. I had an amazing time and I’m looking forward to going again next year.

I am so glad to have passed my private pilot checkride! My next goal is to work on my instrument rating but before I can do that I need to build up a few hours in my family's Cessna 180, so I guess the true next goal is a tailwheel checkout. I have found a tailwheel instructor and really hope to be proficient in tailwheel operations by the end of the year. Other than that, I will be starting my second year at Cal Poly at the end of September and am very excited to finally be learning in person again! I want to thank all of you for awarding me a scholarship earlier this year, it really helped me to keep up the pace of my training and introduced me to a wonderful community that I am all the richer for knowing!
