Letter from the Chair

By Dana Davis

Greetings from Ventura, California, and the 2023 Fall 99s Southwest Section (SWS) Meeting. The San Luis Obispo County chapter is well represented with eight active members in attendance. We had the opportunity to participate in many of the pre-meeting activities including: day trip to the Channel Islands; tour of the Ventura Botanical Gardens; and a tour of the Commemorative Air Force Museum at Camarillo Airport. Our team finished just out of first place in Barry Schiff’s aviation trivia contest, and several members danced to an engaging local band. Our own Susan Conner-Steeb even led us in a line dance!

At our meeting Wednesday, October 4, the delegates will share updates from the Chair Meeting and the Business Meeting of the Southwest Section. One of the big take-aways, was how much everyone who attended, in-person, enjoyed and valued the experience. We heard from several first-timers how much they would take away from attending. Similar to my personal experience, interacting with, and feeling the support, camaraderie and love from other female pilots is very empowering. I hope each of our members will have the opportunity to attend at least one 99s SWS meeting at some point. As we will be hosting the 2024 Fall Southwest Section Meeting, you won’t have to travel far from home next year!
Coming up October 14 & 15 we will host a booth at the Central Coast AirFest at Santa Maria Airport. Contact Anele to sign up for a slot, which includes event entry. We’ll be selling water and collecting donations for our scholarship fund.

The Ninety-Nines Annual Meeting is Saturday, October 28, 2023. Every current member of The Ninety-Nines is eligible to attend the upcoming Annual Meeting in Jordan, whether in person or remotely. It’s very important for anyone planning to attend and vote, to be informed about the credentialing and voting processes. To be able to vote during the meeting, members must register to validate their voting eligibility. You should have received an email with instructions on how to sign up for credentialing—it took me about a minute. Please let me know if you have not received the email or if you have any questions about the credentialing and voting process. Remember, the organization approved a 1-member, 1-vote measure, so every member vote counts.
Mark your calendars: due to the timing of the International Meeting in Jordan, we will push our November meeting back one week. SLO 99s monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, November 8, at ACI Jet, with social time at 5:30, meeting at 6:30, followed by slides and stories from Egypt and Jordan.

As always, it’s a busy month with lots of exciting activities. Check out the calendars below for dates for Cookies to the Tower, and our Annual Holiday Party and Airplane Gift Swap. I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, October 4, at ACI Jet for our Monthly Meeting, a recap of the Southwest Section Business Meeting, and what we learned at the Seminars. Join us at 5:30 for a Social Gathering, feel free to bring your dinner, with the business meeting starting at 6:30. Following the meeting participants will share take-aways from the seminars: Make Your Mistakes Count: Understanding NASA ASRS Aviation Safety Reporting System; Tips & Tricks for Flying into the 2024 Spring SWS Meeting in Reno; Beyond the “Barf Bag”: In-Flight Medical Emergencies and Survival Tips; and The World of Aerobatics: How You Too Can Invert your Horizons. I look forward to seeing you there.

See you at the airport,

Dana

Paso Robles Airport 50th Anniversary (September 23, 2023)

By Grace Crittenden

“Sure, The Ninety-Nines would love to have a booth at the celebration on September 23 - sure we can bring a plane!”
Of course it took a bit more time than anticipated. Dana Davis flew her plane up the day before to avoid the possible early morning fog in SBP. It was a good excuse for me to fly up to Paso to pick Dana up and have lunch at the One Niner Diner.

When we got home, Maureen Sherwood met me at my hangar to fill her truck with the pop-up, table, chairs, weights for the pop-up, our wonderful display boards and Ninety-Nines banners (and lots of bungie cords) so we would be ready for an early driving departure to have everything set up in time. We were supposed to be set up by the 9:00 AM when the gates opened.
