Chairman’s Message

By Susan Steeb

Gratitude for the SLO99s

As I sit and write this, we are less than 2 weeks out from our SW Section meeting [on Oct 3-6]. You will read this shortly after the event [correction: shortly before the event, the ed.]. So, I wanted to keep it simple and just say THANK YOU! We have such an awesome group of ladies who have stepped up to be active and take on making our event a great one! I have the honor of hearing from other chapters how great and organized they think our chapter has been through this planning. We will have around 40 aircraft and 150 pilots from 6 states. We have made it a welcoming and inviting event. We hope to have a record number of first timers. This is what the 99s are all about. Female aviators supporting female aviators! I am SO PROUD of the SLO99s chapter. Again, simply THANK YOU!
Janice Odell – Our treasurer stepped up to manage the Club Express website and the budget. We are the first chapter to use the new site. Alice Talnack from the section has been helpful but Janice really took on a tall task. She is making sure all registrations are correct, paid and updated as needed. She has had to handhold many 99s through this new process. The next chapter will be in better hands after Janice and Alice’s learnings.
Tish Allan-Jacobs – Our Co-Chair coordinates the Hearst Castle tour and transportation for both the Hearst tour and the Saturday travel to ACI Jet for our seminars, all while selling her house and moving to Nevada. Tish will also play host for the Hearst Castle tour.
Kathy Dannecker – A prior Chair – has acted as our liaison with ACI Jet and the airport to coordinate all aspects of the seminars, including AV, insurance and coordination with the tower. THEN she added owning the rolling photos in the flymart room highlighting the SLO99s, our very cool SLO99s video and pictures from the weekends event. This is a game changer!!!
Cheryl Cooney (and Mitch) – supporting our chapter in so many ways since 1982, Cheryl took on the task of coordinating arrivals and departures. With close to 40 aircraft coming in, this is a dance with the tower and ACI Jet to get passengers parked, load luggage and to the hotel with smiles on their faces.
Grace Crittenden – Our fearless fly-out chair took on the hospitality room. It provides the 99s with a quiet room to gather, have a snack and visit with other 99s. Grace has aviation movie nights scheduled for several evenings.
Jill Drexhage signed up to be my right arm at the hotel and also coordinates the silent auction, gathered sponsors and made crafts for a table in the flymart as well as gifts for our registrants. Jill is one crafty lady!
Erin Ayers decorates our banquet tables, coordinates our signage, works with ACI Jet for the arrival festivities AND distributes lunches for the seminars.
Liz Ruth is our the banquet speaker, talking about her career and flying NASA’s SOFIA. She also coordinated our volunteer website and was a consistent voice of reason at our planning meetings. I aspire to be as cool as Liz!
Anele Brooks made all of the registration name tags and coordinates buses with Tish for the Saturday seminars. Anele loves working quietly without attention but puts in so much effort to support the SLO99s. She preceded my as Chapter Chair.
Heather Heaps organized our flymart and wrangled 5 vendor tables and a swap table. She had a small accident while on vacation, so Robin Shatto jumped in to cover Saturday. I’m certain I will owe someone a thank-you for jumping in on Friday as well.
Theresa Theiler will drive 99s to Morro Bay for a tour and play host at the wine & Cheese receptions, help with registration and the chapter chair meeting.
Lynn Edlund works the registration table and helps distribute lunches for the seminars
Avery Paxton helps with registration, seminar registration for wings credit and will be a banquet greeter
Patti Lynn and her husband Thomas help with the seminar registration for wings credit
Haidee Jezek stepped in to help with publicity, plays greeter at the airport and the wine & cheese reception
Olivia Lewis works the registration desk and offered to be interviewed by media as our Cal Poly Flying Club member, AND she will bring snacks!
Marina Luckow will give be the meeting invocation and plays greeter at the airport
Cynthia Douglas provided a sponsorship and volunteer
Anna Vojvoda created our fabulous SLO99s video (below) before heading off to the Air Force
Carla  Cary helps at ACI with arrivals and works a flymart booth
Julie Butler brings snacks and hopes to rejoin us after a work schedule change
Rose McCarver works in the hospitality room
Ali Pompeii works the registration table
Linda Butler put together our list of local attractions
Charly Schaad works tirelessly in the background to put out our newsletter
Special shout out to Susan Mercer, who came to her first meeting at the Embassy Suites for our walk-thru, works the registration table, hosts in the hospitality room, brings snacks and helps with departure transportation – ALL WHILE STARTING HER FLIGHT TRAINING WITH ERIN!
Non SLO99s shout-outs – David Boyd and Cyndi Beaudett, drivers of the 15 passenger vans all weekend for any needs we have!
Ladies, that is 26 participants (27 if you include me). Not just members……
ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS IN OUR CHAPTER. I am humbled, full of gratitude and excited about 2020 with all of you!
Now let’s to get some sleep!
Susan
