Slipstream November 2020

Chairman’s Message

By Jill Drexhage

We had our fly-out to Van Nuys yesterday [Oct 17] and dipped our toes into the LA airspace. Thank you to Grace and Robin who flew and had Cherice and I as their co-pilots. The taxiing seemed to be more stressful and confusing than the flight there and back. Lynn met us at a restaurant nearby for a late breakfast. Thank you Grace for continuing to plan our fly-outs. I believe the tentative plan for our next fly out is to fly to Kern Valley (L05) on November 14th. Grace will update us on time of departure as we get closer to November 14th. I'm sad that I will be missing it. That week is my 40th birthday, and we are headed out of town for the weekend. If I can't have a big party, I might as well get a nice quiet weekend away. The first 40 have been great and I'm looking forward to the next 40 that will be filled with lots and lots of flying.

Who else is excited to be meeting in person again for our November meeting? We will be meeting November 4th in ACI's hangar at 6:00. Grab your dinner (I believe the Spirit may be open for dinner). We will have some tables set up and plenty of chairs that will be spaced out. I want to make sure we all stay safe, so I can't stress enough that we all must adhere to CDC guidelines and wear a mask at all times while inside of ACI, and while we are in the hangar wear a mask at all times you are closer than 6 feet from any one person. Thank you to everyone who has e-mailed me to let me know if you will be joining us. I want to get a head count so we can make sure we have it set up for everyone. If you can't make it in person, don't worry, I will also have a Zoom set up and will e-mail that out to you the week of the meeting. I am looking forward to seeing you all.
This upcoming Monthly Meeting on Wednesday 11/4:
Watch the Yahoo Group Mailing List or Facebook Group for a Zoom link for the November meeting. The meeting will start 6 pm.
This will be a hybrid live/Zoom meeting. The live part will be in the ACI hangar.

Fly-out to Van Nuys (October 17)

By Grace Crittenden
Jill Drexhage flew with me and Cherice Henderson flew with Robin Shatto in her Cessna 170. Lynn Edlund met us at Lulu’s. She is living down south now and is looking to buy into a plane now that she has her license.
There is no restaurant open on the Van Nuys airport on the weekend. Lulu’s was just a short walk from the transient parking called the Park. It was a beautiful day for flying and there were lots of planes in the air. SoCal controllers hopping, LA airspace can be busy! It was a little confusing taxiing on the ground too. We all decided we want to go to a quieter destination for the next fly-out.

Fundraiser for Red Door “Coming Home” Movie

By Elizabeth Dinan

Hi Ladies,

I sent out a couple of emails on The Red Door Films and hope you all received then. I forwarded them to you because they are about our WASPs. I found them interesting, especially since we have a WASP, Dorothy Rooney, living here in Los Osos.
Click here for a trailer of the upcoming movie and to see the fundraising page.
I met Dorothy about 20 years ago when I was flight instructing for Air San Luis. She came to the flight school and introduced herself and asked if we had a female flight instructor. I said yes, I'm here. She said she had not been up for many years, and wanted to go up and see if the "magic" was still there.

We went up in a C152 and after getting in, she said "why are the rudders so small"? She was used to flying T-6s and bombers. We had a wonderful time, the "magic" was still there. Even after all the years of not flying, she had not lost her touch. The only thing I could comment on was that she came in on final approach too high and fast. Having flown a T-6 myself, I fully understood. Dorothy continued to come in to fly every month for a while. Also attended a few of our meetings.

Last year I attended her 101st birthday. She was still pretty spry and we enjoyed talking flying. This June she celebrated her 102nd birthday but because of COVID, I was not able to see her this year, but did send a birthday card from our Chapter. I understand she is sleeping a lot now. I keep in touch with her friend.

I was able and honored to meet several of these ladies at Oshkosh a few years ago. A memory I shall always have.
