99s Kid’s booth and tower tours booth at the San Luis Obispo Airport Day

Chairman’s Message

By Anele Brooks

Kudos to Kathy Dannecker for coordinating Airport Day. She always does an outstanding job, but this year she did an outstanding job in the rain. Still gave plenty of Tower Tours and I'm sure the young people in the crowd enjoyed the Kids' Booth. Surprisingly good turn out in surprisingly bad weather! Thanks to the rain we saved the Drone, Elizabeth Dinan donated, and we can raffle it off next year, weather permitting and with any luck have permission to sell water as an additional fundraiser.
November 16 Santa Maria is hosting a FAAST meeting at the museum [see flyer at the bottom of this page]. David Voelker will be the guest and he will be discussing Air Space. With the amount of traffic and the addition of drones to the skies it should be a good meeting. He is an Aviation Safety Inspector at the Van Nuys FSDO, always has good information and is a great representative for the FAA. I highly recommend any program he is presenting, he is very knowledgeable and an exceptional presenter.
We are rapidly approaching the Holiday Season. Our Christmas Party is coming up and we need to set dates and make plans for Cookies to the Tower. Last year we had several brave souls who took those cookies to the tower in the pouring rain, since we had rain on Airport Day maybe it will be dry for the cookies this year.
Sending get well wishes to Camille Nelson who has a broken foot. It is never fun to be “stuck at home” and she is right now.
Last February we signed up for a group rate with CalStar. They are merging with another non-profit that covers 32 states. The new group rate is $55 annually with one check sent from the organization. If you are interested in participating please let us know so we can make arrangements to keep our group rate. I gave memberships to all my children last year, it seemed like a very small fee for an excellent service.

Minutes of General Meeting

By Anele Brooks

Attendees: Kathy Dannecker, Maureen Sherwood, Janice Odell, Elizabeth Ruth, Elizabeth Dinan, Anele Brooks and Emma DeBrum, guest
Kathy Dannecker started the meeting [October 5, 2016] with an update for Airport Day. She requested additional volunteers and gave us a demonstration of the games that we have in the Kids' Booth: Plane Parts, Talk Like a Pilot Phonetic Alphabet and Connect the Dots on Airplanes. Julie Butler is lending us her Cotton Candy Machine. Crystal Springs is not providing water this year and the County asked if we would like to sell water. We accepted their offer and planned to sell the water for $1/bottle. We will be raffling off the Drone Elizabeth Dinan won at the Southwest Section Meeting in Rubidoux last Spring. Ticket will be $1 each or 6 for $5. Anele will pick up water and ice. If we run low Janice will pick more water up before she comes to work the afternoon shift. The Tower Tours will be the same format as last year.
Elizabeth Ruth reported on the Southwest Sectional Meeting held by the Lancaster Chapter. The Southwest Section will post our activities on their website; they are asking for high quality photos of members with their planes to post on their new website. The meeting was well worth attending.
Janice Odell commented that she met Kaitlyn Jenner at the Camarillo Air Show and that she flies a V-Tail Bonanza.
Elizabeth Dinan will be making calls to our member to find out why they aren't attending meetings and what activities they would be interested in participating in.

Mojave - Fall Southwest Section Meeting September 30 to October 1

By Cheryl Cooney

Chapter Chair Meeting

The bulk of the meeting was a presentation about the new Southwest Section Website. The website has been completely updated by Eline Kok-Vermeulen. The Southwest Section Website: www.sws99s.org. User ID: 99s. Password: 1929airace.
A handout and brief discussion concerning the “Secrets of Successful Chapters” was presented. On-going communications among members, mentoring not only new pilots but active and potential woman pilots, and education and safety were highlighted.

Business Meeting

One Hundred Twelve (112) members answered the roll call at the beginning of the meeting.
The stairs at the museum have been repaired. The cost for the repair was $80,000 coming from the Endowment Fund interest. The Southwest Section voted upon and passed a motion to donate $2,500 for the staffing of the International museum at Oklahoma City.
The endowment fund has reached $2,000,000. Members may remember that the Endowment Fund was started during the presidency of Susan Larson and reached $1,000,000 at the New Orleans International Conference.
There was an extensive discussion of the revised SWS website. It was requested that each chapter review their information and send corrections to Eline Kok-Vermeulan at eline.kok@hotmail.com. It was also requested that members submit high resolution photos of chapter members with their aircraft or by members during their travels to be posted on the website.
Jeanne Fenimore and Paula Sandling led a discussion concerning the retrieval of 18 boxes of SWS memorabilia currently in Texas. The material in the 18 boxes needs to be returned to the SWS’s possession, inventoried and stored in a controlled environment.
NIFA is seeking volunteer judges for the event scheduled in November in San Jose at Reid Hillview (KRHV).
The Saturday Night Banquet included a Murder Mystery Dinner which was lively and extremely entertaining.
