Slipstream May 2016

Chairman’s Message

By Anele Brooks

Wow! It seems incredible to me, but a year has passed and it is now time to elect new officers. Please consider holding office, we do have a wonderful group of women pilots and we do have a good time! The reminders about how time has “flown” came via mail and e-mail. This year the Collings Foundation sent out a postcard and I noticed they will be showing off their fleet of warbirds in Santa Maria from May 16 to May 18 [see list of events below for more information]. I guess it is only fair to share them with other local airports, but I will admit I was disappointed that they weren't coming to KSBP! If you missed them or loved them last year it is worth the drive to KSMX to see them, hear them and, yes, smell them!

Next, Susan Liebeler, from the Ventura 99's, sent out her annual e-mail regarding the Karen Johnson Solo Scholarship:

The Ninety-Nines and EAA will award a $3,000 Karen Johnson Solo Scholarship to provide a young woman (age 16-20 at any time during 2016 calendar year) who wants to learn to fly with financial support for flight training through first solo and beyond. In addition, the winner will receive a King School flight training course to prepare for the written exam and check ride. The scholarship will be awarded during the WomenVenture activities at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh on July 27, 2016. Applications will be accepted through July 1, 2016. Proof of financial need and financial information is not required. Additional information about the scholarship rules, how to apply for the scholarship, scholarship FAQs and a scholarship flyer can be found at www.kjsoloscholarship.com.
Since we first awarded this scholarship in 2013, we have had over 150 young women apply for this scholarship, many of whom have since joined the 99s. I would appreciate it if you would share this email with members of your chapter and friends in the aviation community.
Believe it or not, I received a call from a local high school asking about scholarships. It was nice to pass the information about the Karen Johnson Solo Scholarship along with information regarding our own local chapter scholarship. We have spent many meetings trying to figure out how to get the word out to local schools regarding our scholarship and Discovery Flight opportunities, maybe now we will receive a few applications!! Perhaps Janice's niece, Olivia, will apply in a few years. This lucky young lady took her first glider flight and afterwards was offered a flight in a Reno Air Racer P-51! I think I can honestly say she was bitten by the aviation bug, and of course, she has a wonderful mentor in her aunt!
We will have another opportunity to spread the word later at the Oceano Airport Celebration when we put up our Kids Booth on Saturday, May 14 [see Dates & Schedules below]. We still need volunteers for this event so if you have time and enjoy spending time with pilots and introducing young people to aviation we can use your help. Remember:

Thanks for a great year!!

Minutes of General Meeting

By Grace Crittenden

The meeting [April 6, 2016] started with introductions around the table. Liz Dinan has been flying since she was 17 years old and is now a Master Pilot. Susan Steeb is new from Los Angles area and is flying a Bonanza. Janice Odell has been flying for 7 years and now is in a Bonanza too. Janice’s sister, Judy, and niece, Olivia, were her guests. Olivia is in high school and is flying gliders at Hollister. Anele Brooks says she is not flying her Cessna 182 enough. Kathy Dannecker has been flying a Mooney sine 1999 and currently has about 1100 hours logged, and Grace Crittenden flew her C172 several times during the beautiful weather in February .
Discussion turned to the tower staffing, and it was announced that Ellen Banakis has left the tower [unfortunately this also means no more “Tips from the Tower” in this space, the ed.]. She is currently living in Denver and helping care for her new granddaughter. We will be hearing new voices from the tower and hopefully the new tower manager will come to a chapter meeting in the near future.
Airport Day [KSBP] will be October 15. The EAA will be flying Young Eagles, the fire station will give fire truck rides, and of course we will be helping with the Tower Tours. Kathy Dannecker is our organizer for this event. We will also plan to have a booth with children’s activities again as it was very popular last year.
The Oceano Airport Celebration will be Friday, May 13 (burger fry and dance from 5:30pm) and Saturday, May 14 from 8:30am. We will have some volunteers there [and a Kids Booth].
Janice Odell presented the treasurer’s report. With $2,643 in the bank ($5.36 from Amazon Smile) it was proposed that at the next meeting we discuss dispersing some funds. Possible recipients might be the Ninety-Nines International scholarship funds, the endowment fund, or the Women’s Museum of flight.
At the next meeting we also need to consider chapter officers for next year.

Dates and Schedules

Comments, corrections, and suggestions are welcome. Fly-outs: any dates are flexible and we will confirm plans and set times at the chapter meeting before the scheduled fly-out. Seats will be available for non-pilots, students, and pilots without wings. We want every seat to be filled, so let us know if you want to come along.
