Slipstream June 2021

Chairman’s Message

By Jill Drexhage

Oshkosh is coming up and I’ve decided I’m going. This year I will be driving and not flying in, but I’m excited to go. Sounds like we will have quite a few SLO 99s attending, some flying in and some driving. I’m looking forward to going to the EAA museum and finding the picture of my grandpa. I haven’t been back to Oshkosh since I was a kid and am looking forward to visiting now as an adult.

Fly-out to Porterville’s Airway Café on May 8

By Grace Crittenden

It was perfect spring day with no morning fog, so we got off on time. It seemed like everyone at KSBP was going to enjoy the beautiful flying weather, and everyone was taking off at the same time. There were 4 planes in the run up area when I took off. A slight tailwind pushed us across the valley. A little haze obscured all except the tallest mountains.
Porterville did have a crosswind to challenge us on our arrival. The usual runway for a calm day at Porterfield is 30 but the winds were a little shifty but mostly coming for 210 at about 5 Knots. The planes before us were landing on runway 12 - the windsock was perpendicular to the runway the whole time we were there.
Our four planes all arrived about the same time. Maureen was the first to arrive in the Super Cub. I was the next one to land with Alessandra as copilot. Carlee and Susan were just tied down when Robin landed her Cessna 170.
Several local planes were flying Young Eagles and the restaurant was busy. Lots was happening. Kids and families waiting on the lawn for their turn to fly. The temperature was perfect for sitting out on the patio.
We were all getting hungry when the waitress came for our order and almost everyone ordered something with bacon. Lots of fun talk about flying to Oshkosh.
Then it was back in the air for a smooth flight back. Flight following suggested an altitude of 6500 feet so we could be followed by LA Center, but then they were unable to hand us off after all. We came in over Lopez and as always, we were amazed by the beauty of our area and how lucky we are to be flying here.

Minutes of the General Meeting (5/5/2021)

By Anele Brooks

Attending: Jill Drexhage, Maureen Sherwood, Grace Crittenden, Elizabeth Dinan, Janice Odell, Dana Davis, Susan Steeb, Alessandra Rizzo, Zoe Lief, Erin Ayers, Sylvanna Bilicska, Charlotte Anderson, Emmie Smith, Anele Brooks

Jill Drexhage called the meeting to order at 6:03. It was a combination in-person/Zoom meeting and was held at ACI's new facility, however, no one joined on Zoom and Jill disconnected it.

Dana Davis, our newest pilot (as of 2 months ago), was awarded a SLOFLY t-shirt.

Grace announced she is leaving on a two week cross country to Richmond, Virginia.

Jill asked us to introduce ourselves to the group because we had a few new faces in the group.

Compass Rose update: Jill reported that Kathy Dannecker spoke with the airport administration and they would love to have us refresh the Compass Rose. The county will provide the paint, we will provide the labor. We should do it during the runway shutdowns. The KSBP Compass Rose has officially been added to the Los Angeles Sectional Chart as a holding location. The runways will be closed periodically from July through October.

Jill will create admins for the Facebook page. She asked if she should just accept or decline people who ask to join our page. The consensus was that she could just make the decision without presenting it to the group.

Website Update: Our website was hacked. It was originally created by Aurora, she located her original files and was able to put them back up. The current scholarship information was added to the website. Aurora has agreed to maintain the backend of the site and we will provide her with the content. It is currently hosted free on Digital West. We were not maintaining the backend. The website is up currently. There is a lot of new content and Susan is looking for a date to hold a committee meeting. Zoe Lief volunteered to help with the website and serve on the committee.

Dues are due in June. We do NOT collect dues from student pilots. Janice accepts checks, cash and Venmo. Annual dues are $20. There was a brief discussion about asking ACI for a donation for our scholarships. Susan believes there is a template for the letter that was sent to ACI requesting a donation in the past.

Dana Davis was curious about how chapters are chosen for sectional meetings.

RSAT meeting. Dylan had two pieces of information. Statistics across the country show that runway incursions are up, there was one incident here and the airport is looking at installing better signage. The tower is now fully staffed and “line-up and wait” is now permitted again. It was discontinued when the tower was understaffed.

The May fly-out will be to Porterville [see the report above, the ed.]. There is a nice restaurant there. Grace is hoping there won't be too much fog. Plan to meet in Porterville at 11:30. The group was asked if any right seats were available. The June fly-out is tentatively scheduled for June 12. The choices are: Watsonville, Monterey, Santa Paula (99s Museum in located there). Grace asked if anyone was interested in an overnight fly-out. We still would like to visit Tish in Nevada City.
