Slipstream June 2018

Chairman’s Message

By Susan Conner-Steeb

Let’s Go Flying!
Ladies, I am honored to be your Chapter Chair for the next year. We all want to thank Anele Brooks for three years of incredible service as our Chapter Chair. She has agreed to stay active and be my mentor and our Secretary. We have a great group of committed ladies to move forward for what we hope will be an active year.
Our plan is to have a monthly fly-in to be announced at each Wednesday meeting by Grace Crittenden [see fly-out schedule down below]. We also plan to add some speakers and content to the Wednesday meetings. 5:30 we can meet to order meals and chat. 6-7 will be our meeting program and 7-8 we’ll begin our SW Section Planning for Fall of 2019. That sounds like a long way away but it will be here fast. Grace has stepped in as coordinator for that event. We have a committee of about 6 ladies but could use more.
Last weekend, we had a great turnout to the Oceano Airport Celebration [see photos above and below]. We made a lot of hamburgers on Friday and served some awesome Tri-Tip on Saturday. The SLO99s earned over $700 for our scholarship fund.
For our next meeting, June 6th, I invited our tower controllers to join us:
  • Rick Johnson - tower lead while Dillan is on temporary duty in Alaska
  • Robert - ex Palm Springs (who would love parallel runways in SLO)
  • Ryan - Tall guy we met when we delivered cookies to the tower last Christmas
  • Amanda - The new gal who replaced Patti who retired to Idaho last month
Please join us to hear the latest updates about the tower activities and to meet the new gal. Remember to wear your new Chapter name badges to the meeting. See you there!

Minutes of General Meeting

By Anele Brooks

The meeting [Wednesday, May 2, 2018] was called to order by Grace Crittenden at 6:20 p.m.
In attendance: Tish Allan Jacobs, Elizabeth Dinan, Erin Hawkes, Janice O'Dell, Liz Ruth, Marina Luckow, Grace Crittenden, Susan Steeb, Jolie Lucas, Anele Brooks and guest Kelli Hill.
Liz Ruth and Grace Crittenden were given congratulations for their presentations at the Estrella Warbird Museum in March. Elizabeth Dinan will be presenting a program there later this year.
Erin Hawkes was congratulated for becoming a new CFI, she is flying with SunWest Aviation.
Liz Ruth nominated Susan Steeb to become Chapter Chair, it was seconded by Erin Hawkes and passed unanimously; Susan Steeb nominated Tish Allan Jacobs as Vice Chair, it was seconded by Liz Ruth and passed unanimously; Janice O'Dell was nominated and will retain her position as Treasurer; Susan Steeb nominated Marina Luckow and Anele Brooks as co-Secretaries, the nomination was seconded by Erin Hawkes and passed unanimously. Elizabeth Dinan will remain Membership Chair, Grace Crittenden will chair the new position of Fly-out Chair.
We welcomed our guest Kelli Hill. Her daughter, Hannah is a student at Purdue, is working on her commercial and instrument ratings and is a member of the San Diego Chapter of the 99's. Kelli started flying in Orange County 20 years ago, but life interrupted her flight lessons. Grace suggested she take an introductory flight compliments of the SLO 99's.
Elizabeth Dinan handed out name badges to the members who ordered them.
Jolie Lucas brought posters for the Oceano Airport Celebration to be held on May 11 and 12 [see photos above and below]. Our Chapter will be hosting the BBQ on Friday night. The cost is $10 – we will retain $7 and $3 is used to pay for the band. A sheet was passed around for volunteers to sign. Set up is from 10 to 2 on Friday afternoon. The program starts at 5:30. Friends of Oceano Airport collects items for military care packages for active duty front line troops. A Veteran's Salute will be presented at noon on Saturday. The Santa Maria Softball Team is hosting the Pancake Breakfast Saturday morning. Supervisor Lynn Compton will be making an opening announcement Saturday morning. The SLO 99's will be serving a lunch provided by Old Juan's Cantina. Jolie asked us to bring heavy duty extension cords with our names on them to provide electricity. ACI is donating a significant fuel discount to pilots who fly in. Camping is available for the Oceano Celebration and also for any campers who might like to camp when we host the Fall 2019 Southwest Section Meeting.
Jolie also announced that the Oceano AWOS is now up and running in test mode. The radio frequency is 118.375, phone number is (805) 489-1305. The Friends of Oceano Airport has been working towards getting an AWOS at the airport since 2009.
Several members attended the Southwest Sectional Meeting in Bakersfield the weekend of April 26 – 28. The Bakersfield Chapter is also a small group. On Thursday there was a bus ride to a ranch for wine and olive oil tasting. Friday the group met for a presentation on Mountain Flying, about 25 people attended. Those in attendance were invited to visit California Aeronautical College, it is run by a “visionary”. A class of 50 students will be starting a 3 ½ year intensive program in August. The students will graduate with a BA in Business and Aviation. So far all the students who have attended have been hired. The regional airlines come in to interview and hire students quarterly. There was also a “Fly Mart” with three vendors, a silent auction and a raffle. Transportation was a struggle. Tish has volunteered to take on the transportation when we host the meeting. Friday night attendees were treated to Basque food.
Saturday morning a meeting was scheduled from 9:00 a.m to noon. The meeting ran long, events started at 1:00 so many people missed lunch. We decided not to plan any activities for 1:00 in case the meeting we host runs long. Saturday afternoon there was a choice of an ATC seminar or a Farm Tour. Saturday dinner was held at the Petroleum Club, it was on the 12th floor and had a spectacular view of the City of Bakersfield. Approximately 50 students who are members of the “Strolling Strings” came in and entertained everyone. The Bakersfield Meeting had 56 rooms reserved, 101 registrations and 120 people at the dinners on Friday and Saturday. 25 planes flew in. The Bakersfield Chapter rented school busses for transportation at a cost of $1,200 for six trips.
The Fall Southwest Section Meeting will be held October 4 – 6 in Upland. The local field is Cable Airport. They have broken registration into: Early Registration, Mid-Registration, and Late Registration. An Escape Room, Bonnie & Clyde Dinner Theater and Indoor Skydiving are the event options.
We may be able to plan an event at the Melodrama in Oceano, a Hearst Castle Tour, a Doc Burnstein's Ice Cream Social and Wine Tasting at ACI (with their permission, of course!) Janice will start a budget for us, the Southwest Section has seed money to help us with costs. We have been told not to sign anything until the National Organization has time to review it.
Grace presented a tentative fly-out schedule [see also in the Dates & Schedules section below]:
May 19 – Castle AFB – Museum or Merced, June 17- New Cuyama – the runway is being redone, July 14 we have been invited to Napa Valley, August – Santa Maria, September 15 – Pine Mountain (we were invited by a 99 at the Bakersfield meeting), October 13 – Kern Valley, November 17 – Harris Ranch, December – Paso Robles and January 12 – Death Valley, Furnace Creek, February 16 – Santa Ynez. Grace would like to plan a landing at Vandenberg AFB and we will send our schedule to other 99 chapters.
Tentatively we will work on planning for the Southwest Section meetings during the second ½ of our meetings. The next few meetings we will work on the framework for the Section Meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
