Slipstream June 2017

Chairman’s Message

By Anele Brooks

Surprise, it's me again, temporarily serving as Chairperson until someone else steps up!! Remember that June is the beginning of another year for us – so it is time to pay your dues, either by mail (P.O. Box 5214, San Luis Obispo, CA 93403) or in person at the next meeting.
Mothers' Day Weekend was the Annual Oceano Airport Celebration. Elizabeth Dinan and I went early on Friday to set up and Marina Luckow joined me Friday night to sell Strawberry Shortcake after the Burger Fry. We sold about 30 desserts and on Saturday Lynn Compton came over, bought one and donated $85 to our Scholarship Fund – altogether we raised $176 to add to our Scholarship Account. Erin Hawkes brought her nephew, it was a great way to introduce a little one to aviation. The Oceano Airport Celebration is a lot of fun – this year we had a formation flying demonstration of two Piper Cubs and a Piper Tri-Pacer – you don't see that every day. The weather was perfect, just a little windy but that didn't keep many people away. Jolie Lucas did another great job of pulling the event together and hopefully impressing people with what a great little airport L52 is! That is more important than ever.
Most of you probably have already heard that the anti-airport group in Santa Monica has finally won and that Santa Monica is scheduled to be shut down at the end of 2028 [see https://goo.gl/MqfhLE]. We do need to work hard to protect our remaining airports and supporting the Friends of Oceano Airport is a good local place to start.
August is the Annual Movie Night at Oceano and The Rocketeer will be playing. I suggest that we plan to hold our August meeting on Movie Night and help Jolie prepare for the event. I would also like to suggest that we work with the Friends of Oceano Airport and schedule our Poker Run for the Saturday of the Oceano Celebration next year. We might get more planes participating, it will increase the turnout at the event itself and hopefully it will also help us rebuild our scholarship fund. Plus, Oceano is a great place for an event – it has a nice picnic area, plenty of parking and it is more accessible than San Luis Obispo. The aviation community is very small, we need to work together to make sure we preserve our ability to fly!
