Chairman’s Message

By Jill Drexhage

Thank you to everyone who have been recommending speakers and topics. Janice did a great job talking about weather this last month, and I’m hoping everyone learned something new. I know I did. I love that we have decided to add speakers to our monthly meeting. Please continue to think of what you want to learn about and let’s continue to have great topics. You can send your ideas to me at:

Fly-out to Monterey’s Woody’s Restaurant on June 13

By Grace Crittenden

Another wonderful fly-out - We lucked out again with the weather. The fog burned off just in time for our departure and pulled back out over the water in Monterey for our approach.
Allison Perrine flew right seat with Grace Crittenden, with Dana Davis taking pictures in the back seat with Grace’s dog, Kay. Allison is planning to start flying lessons soon. Sitting in the right seat, she was quite relaxed when she took the yoke. She had flown with her grandfather when she was younger, and it showed with her steady hand and stable altitude. She was the autopilot for a good part of the trip up and back.
Robin Shatto took off from KSMX and picked up her sister, Gay, at KPRB on her way to Monterey, and Janice ODell swooped in with Elizabeth Dinan. Everyone met at the Del Monte FBO and it was a short walk to Woody’s restaurant at the terminal building. One the second floor, we had a beautiful view of the airport and the runways. Jeanne Sabankaya and Mona Kendrick, both Ninety-Nines with the Monterey chapter, joined us for lunch on the patio for a lot of happy hangar talk and a lovely lunch.
Taking off on 28L provided a spectacular view of the coastline and sparkling blue water of the Monterey Bay. Grace’s plane and Robin’s plane cruise at about the same speed. They had a fun flight back as far as Paso keeping in sight of each other.
The air was cool and clear and calm. The food and the company was great. A perfect day for flying and another memorable fly-out!

Minutes of the General Meeting (6/2/2021)

By Grace Crittenden

We started the meeting with a tour of the new ACI facility. Kate Kessler, the ACI client relations manager, shared the beautiful architectural space of the new hangars and offices and views of the airport – a beautiful FBO facility right here at KSBP.

After member and guest introductions, we firmed up plans for a fly-out to Monterey on June 13.

Janice ODell reviewed the new FAA advisory 91-92 that clarifies what is a legal weather briefing. She emphasized that the document seems to say that a self briefing may be legal. A briefing from Foreflight and from FlightService is actually recorded and documented so proof of the briefing can be verified. She also shared the GFA site at the ADDS website provides an excellent weather source with multiple layers and synthesizes a combination of weather factors.

Susan Steeb reports that we are still working on our chapter website with Aurora Lipper. It is being rebuilt on the WordPress format. Digital West will continue to host the website. Tim Williams has generously hosted the website for years at no charge.

The Ninety-Nines International meeting will be virtual this year in July. Our chapter has 6 delegate votes.

Kathy Dannecker has started the negotiations and planning to repaint the compass rose when the airport is closed in August. The airport has offered to provide the paint. Kathy has had experience with this project in the past. She and Camille Nelson organized the initial painting of the compass rose in 2009 and the the repainting in 2015.
