Chairman’s Message

By Anele Brooks

At our June Meeting [June 1, 2016], we elected officers – mostly re-elected. Grace Crittenden officially took on the position of Secretary (thank you Grace); Janice O'Dell stayed on as Treasurer (thank you Janice); Liz Ruth accepted the position of Vice Chairman (thank you Liz) and I am still the Chairperson.
We had a guest, possibly a new member, who is learning to fly and was referred to the 99's by Erin Hawkes. After the meeting she told me that Erin had suggested that maybe some of us might have some suggestions as to headsets, flying tools, etc. and that maybe some of us might have some items we no longer needed and would like to sell them.
As I thought about our conversation and then read that Camille and Maureen were both selling their aircraft it dawned on me that perhaps the 99's could be a resource for student pilots for unused and no longer needed aviation “stuff”! Learning to fly is expensive and maybe some of us have items that can be lent/sold to students (referred to us by Erin or JB) to help them keep some of the costs down. I know I have a very worn out headset (that still works), probably an E6B calculator, outdated charts – the list goes on – that I would be very happy to give to a student pilot. Whatever it takes to get more people flying!! At our next meeting I would like to discuss the possibility of being a “clearing house” of sorts for our local student pilots.
August 20 is Movie Night at Oceano Airport [see flyer below] – if Movie Night is just half as much fun as the Oceano Airport Celebration it is worth attending, mark your calendars for this fun family event!
The Antelope Valley Chapter will be hosting the Fall Sectional Meeting – this one is close – if you would like to attend the information can be found at: http://ninetynines.net/sws99sAV/
Next meeting is Wednesday, July 6, see you then!

Minutes of General Meeting

By Grace Crittenden

There was lots of hangar talk and a brief meeting [June 1, 2016]. The news was announced that Liz Ruth will be flying a 747 for NASA and will be flying out of Palmdale. She will start her training soon.
Dawn Feigel is a future woman pilot flying with SunWest.
The business of the meeting was the election of new officers. Anele Brooks agreed to continue as the chair, and Liz Ruth will be the Vice Chairman.  Janice O’Dell will continue as the treasurer and Grace Crittenden will be secretary.  Our dear Charly Schaad will continue with the Slipstream.
The rest of the meeting was spent sharing a documentary on Poncho Barnes, a remarkable aviatrix.

Emma DeBrum’s Thank You Letter

Dear 99’s,
I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to take a discovery flight with Aerocademy.
We flew a Cessna 152 Mike Bravo. I got to listen to my flight instructor talk to the tower as we taxied our way to the runway. I found it interesting how they were so organized with all the different meanings for what they were saying. He showed me how to work the throttle and how to take off. When we got off the ground, he allowed me to test the controls without telling me what they did. I found this especially fun because it allowed me to figure out how it all worked on my own. I think the most important thing I learned was that up is down and down is up. But that didn’t take me long to figure out. I flew out towards Morro Rock and got to do a sharp turn around it. Then I flew along the coast line passing Diablo Canyon,
and out towards Avila Beach. It was a very windy day but I thought it was fun to fly with turbulence. We then flew over the highway back in the direction of the airport. My instructor said that because I did such a good job flying I could try to line up the plane with the runway. So I had to turn the plane around and straighten us out. Because it was windy he took over at the last second. He said he could tell how much I was enjoying flying so he said I could keep my hands on the controls so I could feel how it felt to land. When I stepped out of the plane I couldn’t stop smiling. It was so amazing and I don’t think this is something I want to give up on one bit! I plan to do more flights in the future and stay in involved with Aerocademy and the 99s.
Thank you again for the opportunity,

Emma DeBrum
