Slipstream February 2020

Chairman’s Message

By Susan Steeb

Sharing the love and possibilities of flight!

We are all drawn to flying for different reasons. Among us are commercial pilots, air racers, military pilots, flight instructors, commuters, weekend sightseers and student pilots.

I was drawn to the air but had no idea the world it would open up. I knew as soon as I got my PPL (private pilot license) owning an airplane was in my future. Using the plane as a means to commute to work made it easy to justify. But then “Dallas Faye”, my Bonanza, became my time machine.

Dallas Faye has opened up a world where flying to dinner in San Francisco or Los Angeles is possible, a sunset flight over Morro Bay after a long day is a relaxing option and planning a trip to Oshkosh or joining friends in formation flight helps sharpen my skills. The biggest surprises and joys, however, have come without planning.

Flight allows me to live where I want to live, and work where I want to work. I can now choose to take my mother-in-law to visit family easily and often. It was given me a community of inspiring women aviators with a fast array of goals. Flying has given me OPTIONS!

Our ability to fly opens so many doors, some planned, some not. Where will flying take you?

Meet A Member

By Susan Mercer

I am Susan Mercer and live in Grover Beach, CA. My memories of jetting around with a friend while getting his pilot's license started my joy of flying. Seeing the Wright Brothers' exhibit at the Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan a few years ago rekindled my fascination and curiosity. Speaking with some girlfriends who shared about their pilot's license training further piqued my curiosity to 'explore' this possibility.
So, I inquired at SunWest Aviation about taking lessons (side note: birds, especially hawks, have significance to me). Before making major decisions in my life, I ask the Universe for a "sign". The owner of SunWest took my name and number so the instructor - who was not there at the time - could call me. He then handed me her card, Erin Hawkes. I love how the Universe makes my signs so clear.
Now, here I am, embarking on this adventure of obtaining my private pilot's license. Grateful to be connected with the 99s ladies and the joy of jetting about again!
