Letter from the Chair

By Dana Davis

Another exciting week, month, and year, in aviation! In July, the SLO 99s had a fun fly out to Camarillo for lunch with the Ventura 99s. I also had the opportunity to fly in, and try out a Vans RV14, 215 hp with a full glass panel—that was a big step up from my 150 hp, steam gauge, six pack, Cheetah. WOW! Then, after a little last minute maintenance and a lot of preparation, we took off for EAA AirVenture
Finally, Saturday morning I flew, with Tim in the right seat, in the Cherokees to Osh mass arrival. We landed 44 Cherokees and Grummans in 8 minutes. Whew! That afternoon we watched Susan Steeb and Carlee Szarek land with the Bonanza Mass arrival. With over 100 planes in formation, the sky was filled with landing lights as far as you could see. It was quite a spectacle. Our chapter is well represented with five members attending Oshkosh this year. I can’t wait to hear what everyone learned and saw.
Yesterday I saw USAF Major Courtney Hintz, a pilot and physician, present From Comfort Zone to Growth Zone.” Courtney encouraged us not to be complacent in our flying, but to push ourselves beyond our fears and to expand our skills. Some ideas: do everyday things differently; challenge your beliefs; get creative; and find a mentor/be a mentor. When you move in, beyond your comfort zone, is when you really grow and enrich your life by being engaged and excited.

Our calendar is full of opportunities to participate with the 99s in many fun ways—Fly-outs, Airport Celebrations, and Ninety-Nines events. Peruse the list below to see where you’d like to participate, then join us at the Spirit of San Luis on Wednesday, August 2, for our monthly gathering and meeting. Come at 5:30 for dinner (order and pay for what you would like) and social time, with the meeting starting at 6:00.

See you at the airport,
Dana

Fly-Out to Camarillo (June 17)

By Grace Crittenden

The Ventura Ninety-Nines have a lunch gathering at The Way Point Cafe patio each month on the first Thursday of the month, so we had plans to join them. They usually meet at 11:30. The fog that morning at KSBP was not cooperative and did not clear until about 11:00. When the sun did came out, we were ready to fly, and we were getting hungry by the time we landed in Camarillo about 12:30.
