Slipstream August 2020

Chairman’s Message

By Jill Drexhage

How wonderful was it to meet in person for last months meeting? I had some concerns over how it would go over having half online on Zoom and half in person, but it went so well. I appreciate ACI for allowing us the use of their hangar.

While it was great to get together in person, I’m not sure if we will be getting together in person next month [on August 5th] or strictly by zoom. I would love to meet in person, but with cases soaring, I don’t know that meeting in person is the right move to keep everyone safe. We will send an email to our SLO99s yahoo email group and post on Facebook the details of our next meeting, so stay tuned.

I love hearing that many of you are continuing to fly. Dana, Susan M, and Lynn are all working hard in their training. Susan S has been doing formation flying, and Janice did a multi-state flight. And Grace continues to plan our fly-outs. Thank you for coordinating those, Grace. I appreciate it.

I haven’t done much flying recently as starting a new business has taken much of my time. I do have a plan to start getting up regularly again and am looking forward to that.

Happy flying.

Scholarship News

By Liz Ruth

We have a couple of scholarship news items for this month:

1. Reminder: our chapter is awarding an Aviation Scholarship for $3,000. Submission due date is September 1, 2020. Please see our website for application eligibility and instructions slo99s.org/scholarships

2. The International Ninety-Nines is awarding Fly Now scholarships in October. Our very own Olivia Lewis won $3,000 through this program last April. You can get up to $6,000, depending on specific milestones you accomplish. The process is fairly complex and involves asking for a chapter member to be your mentor, so start looking at the instructions now.

Susan Steeb reported that since our chapter has 32 members we have six votes at the International Conference that was held on July 11, 2020. Most of the votes will be in regard to administrative issues. Delegates must be registered. There is a separate log-on for voting, registrations close on July 7. Members were sent an email with registration instructions, if you plan to attend please use that email to register for the convention.

Members were asked if we want one person to hold all the delegate votes or multiple people. Jill asked who was planning to attend and who wanted to be a delegate. The meeting begins at 8:30 PST. A unanimous vote elected Susan Steeb to serve as our sole delegate and cast our votes.
