Slipstream August 2017

Chairman’s Message and Minutes

By Anele Brooks
Elizabeth Dinan brought in two of her many scrapbooks [to the 99s Meeting of July 5, 2017] and fascinated us with both the scrapbooks and stories of her flying and Air Racing days. No doubt she would continue if given the opportunity! She knew and was friends with many of the early female pilots and her scrapbooks are filled with fascinating news articles and pictures. I don't think I am the only one who hopes that Elizabeth will bring in some other books and tell us about the articles and pictures in them. She needs to write a book and maybe that is something we can help her do as a Chapter! [Check out the picture gallery below this article!]
We did collect dues – if you were unable to attend – you can mail them in to: SLO 99's, P.O. Box 5214, San Luis Obispo, CA 93403. Our dues are $15.00 annually. It was suggested we increase them and allocate the increase to our scholarship fund, but that was tabled for a later meeting.
Our August meeting will be on Saturday, August 5 at the Oceano Airport Movie Night [instead of the regular meeting on the first Wednesday as usual]. We will be selling both Strawberry Shortcake and S'more Kits to raise money for our scholarship fund. The movie is The Rocketeer” which was filmed in Santa Maria – so some of the scenery and the airport are familiar sights. Please mark your calendars and join us if you can.
Wednesday, August 9 at 6:00 p.m., we will be hosting Jim Ure. He has written a book about Gertrude Tompkins, the only WASP still missing today. Elizabeth Dinan has made arrangements with Sunwest Aviation to hold the talk at their facility [at 835 Airport Drive, San Luis Obispo]. We will be providing refreshments and the author has offered to donate proceeds from the sale of his book to our chapter. It should be very interesting, please tell your friends and make plans to attend. Elizabeth has already reached out to our local EAA Chapter and to the Santa Maria 99's Chapter.
The Paso Robles AirFest will be held at the end of August [25 & 26]. If there is enough interest we could get a table for the dinner on Friday night – or plan a fly-out so there are 99's in attendance. The flyer is posted on our Facebook Page and was also forwarded to our e-mail group.
Jolie Lucas did offer to let us host the BBQ at the Toys for Tots event at Oceano Airport on December 2nd. It is a chance to revive our Poker Run which was always a lot of fun. Hopefully participation will increase if it is combined with the December  2nd event hosted by “The Friends of Oceano Airport”.
See you Saturday, August 5!

Dates and Schedules

Comments, corrections, and suggestions are welcome. Fly-outs: any dates are flexible and we will confirm plans and set times at the chapter meeting before the scheduled fly-out. Seats will be available for non-pilots, students, and pilots without wings. We want every seat to be filled, so let us know if you want to come along.
