Slipstream August 2016

Chairman’s Message

By Anele Brooks

First, and before I forget, our annual dues are due. Please bring your $15 dues payment to our meeting on August 3 or mail a check to P.O. Box 5214, San Luis Obispo, CA 93403. Our dues are our only source of revenue at this point so please get them in to Janice!
At our last meeting we planned a couple of fly-outs. Two planes flew to Salinas and five of us enjoyed lunch at the restaurant in the terminal. It was a great way to get back in the air again – for me months go by before I work flying time into my schedule. So these fly-outs are a great excuse to fly. It is very true that we spend many hours in the air working on getting our license, then once we have it don't make the time to go up! Our next fly-out is scheduled for August 12 – destination: Watsonville! It should be fun and it isn't too far away! If you have destination for a fly-out, please let us know and we can plan a trip, of course we prefer airports with restaurants!
As you probably already know Third Class Medical Reform was included in the FAA Authorization Extension. Very exciting, but we still have to wait for up to six months before the new reforms are turned into regulations, if the FAA doesn't get the regulations competed by July 15, 2017 the FAA cannot take enforcement action against a pilot for not holding a valid Third Class Medical. So, if your Third Class Medical expires between now and then you still need to see an AME and get a medical certificate. The new rules aren't quite a “Drivers' License” medical, but are much easier to comply with than the current regulations and hopefully will get more pilots in the air!
The Friends of Oceano Airport will be showing The Princess Bride on Saturday, August 20 [see the flyer below]. You can fly in, drive in, bike in or walk in, but it should be fun. Admission is free, the fire pits will be burning, so bring your S'Mores supplies! The event begins at 6:00 p.m.

Minutes of General Meeting

By Grace Crittenden
The meeting [July 6, 2016] started with a discussion of possible destinations for fly-outs. Most of those attending will be available to fly midweek. Camarillo will be having their airshow Aug 20 and 21. Watsonville sounded like fun so it is on the schedule for Friday, August 5 (now changed to August 12). Some of us could not wait for a whole month, so we have a trip to Salinas for lunch on Wednesday July 13. Paso is scheduled to open a Café sometime this summer, so as soon as happens we can head over there. Other destinations we discussed are Harris Ranch, Bakersfield Muni, Fox Field, Rosemond, and maybe Porterville (if the restaurant is open) when the weather cools off a bit. There are lots of fun places to go that are not too far away.
After the contributions to the Ninety-Nines Endowment Fund, the Women’s Museum of Flight, and the Amelia Earhart Scholarship, our current balance is $991.32. It is time again for the chapter dues. The members’ dues of $15 a year go to cover the cost of our post office box ($86/year) and our website ($15 a year and we paid 5 years in advance with 3 years left to go). We have been averaging one Discovery Flight a month.
Camille Nelson has indeed sold her Cessna 182 – bittersweet news. We will miss her at the airport but a happy new pilot bought it right away.
Airport Day is coming up on October 15 and EAA will need pilots to fly the Young Eagles. Elizabeth Dinan won a drone at the last Southwest Meeting and she offered it to be a prize for a fundraising raffle. Kathy Dannecker will ask at the next meeting if that would be all right with the committee.
Sometimes students are looking for headsets and other books, equipment and charts that we are no longer using. It was proposed that we could list some things we could give away or sell on our website. Anything posted there would be accessible to the flight schools, instructors and students.
Aurora Lipper did such a great job on updating the website, but we are not keeping it up to date. We need to create a mechanism or process to post current information on the site. We also want the Slipstream posted there. It was suggested that the vice chair might be able to take that on. We all agreed that would be a great solution – especially since the vice chair was not at the meeting to protest. We will contact her to propose the idea.
Since the tower staff are all new, Kathy will invite the new manager to come to our meeting in August or September [John Hanf is coming on August 3, see below].

John Hanf at the Chapter Meeting, August 3, 2016

Mark your calendar for the August 3 meeting, when our guest will be John Hanf, Air Traffic Manager for San Luis Obispo airport! John will talk about the latest airport procedures as well as the most common mistakes made by pilots and how we can all help keep things running smoothly.
Bring your questions to get the most out of our evening with John! Social 1/2 hour is from 5:30 pm-6:00 pm. Our program with John begins at 6:00 pm!

Dates and Schedules

Comments, corrections, and suggestions are welcome. Fly-outs: any dates are flexible and we will confirm plans and set times at the chapter meeting before the scheduled fly-out. Seats will be available for non-pilots, students, and pilots without wings. We want every seat to be filled, so let us know if you want to come along.
