SLIPSTREAM November 2023
The mission of The Ninety-Nines is to promote the advancement of aviation through education, scholarships, and mutual support while honoring their unique history and shared passion for flight.

Letter from the Chair

By Dana Davis

As I write this, I am recovering from jet-lag after attending my first Ninety-Nines International Conference — in Jordan! In addition to the Annual Business Meeting, the Arabian Section planned a fabulous tour to show us the history, beauty, and the people of the area. What a wonderful first International Conference experience. (see article below)

Our own Southwest Section is large and has frequent meetings which makes it easy to lose sight of the larger organization. The Ninety-Nines, Inc. spans the world, encouraging the camaraderie, the opportunity of flight, and exciting career opportunities with women around the world. In the US we see the total number of women pilots increasing but the statistics are unclear as to whether the percentage of female pilots is increasing. The Arabian section is making strides in their part of the world. In Jordan, most, if not all, of the pilots we met were professional pilots. We were introduced to the first Arabian Female commercial pilot as well as many female pilots who were the first at their specific airline. (Of our five international flights to Jordan, we had one female pilot.) Although our local, core group of members lean heavily towards general aviation pilots, we have many, mostly young, women, who move through our group on their way to careers in aviation. We hope to have a positive impact along their path, encouraging them and providing educational and scholarship opportunities when we can.

I was moved by the words of Alia Twal, Arabian Chapter Governor and International Conference and Tour organizer, as she shared at the closing banquet, “We are all ambassadors for our countries, as pilots, and for young women interested in aviation.” (incomplete quote). I hope as we move forward and make plans for the coming year, we will strive to be the best ambassadors we can be for the 99s, for aviation, and for women pilots.

See you at the airport.

Dana

Our next meeting will be a Holiday get-together at the Susan Conner Steeb’s on December 6.

First, Egypt!

Prior to arriving in Amman, Jordan, the six SLO 99’s, Dana Davis, Janice Odell, Susan Conner Steeb, Robin Shatto, Lynn Edlund and Theresa Theiler traveled for a week in Egypt. It was a trip filled with adventure, sand, fun, laughter and a lot of the following:
