Letter from the Chair

by Dana Davis

Chair Message, March 2024

Love was in the air in February - love of flying, love of our fellow 99s, and love for a few new airplanes in the chapter. Hopefully you got some time in the air during the beautiful February days.

Our February meeting was held at the Paso Robles Airport and twenty women showed up to share their experiences and hear our guest speaker, Jolie Lucas. Jolie posed the question, How far can you put your head in an alligator’s mouth and still be certain you can get it back out?” (read more about her presentation below). Huge thank you to Jolie for stepping in last minute when our original speaker was ill. If you haven’t seen Jolie speak, she does a wonderful presentation on the Psychology of Personal Flight Minimums, realistically assessing yourself, and flight safety.

Santa Ynez airport was the site of our Annual Valentine’s Day Flash Mob Fly In to meet the Ventura 99s and LA 99s for a potluck picnic lunch. It was a beautiful day to fly, and 25, 99s, 49 ½s, and future 99s arrived in a variety of planes. It’s always fun to spend time with other pilots. Our March fly-out is scheduled for March 9 or 10, watch for more information.

The SLO 99s have a new WhatsApp group, and a Google Calendar. If you would like to join either and need more information, send a note to:
Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 6, at ACI Jet in San Luis Obispo. Bring a Flight Minimums to share.

See you at the airport,
Dana

February Monthly Meeting at Paso Robles

By SLO 99’s

The ACI facility at Paso Robles hosted our February meeting. It was great fun to change day, time and venue for our get together, and wonderful to have our own member, Jolie, share from her specialized experience.
We will be back to our normal SBP for March, but be sure to be on the look out for other changes in dates and times!

Into The Alligator’s Mouth

By Jolie Lucas

Psychological Factors Affecting Personal Flight Guidelines Program by Jolie Lucas, LCSW

How far can you put your head in an alligator’s mouth and still be certain you can get it out?

Jolie gave an inspired talk about flight safely. She shared how knowing yourself, realistically
assessing your mindset, mood, and skills, and setting personal minimums will help to make you a
safer pilot. She also shared some new data showing how men and women tend to process
information and situations differently.

Here are some valuable takeaways, and questions to ask yourself, from Jolie’s talk.
  • Put a Ring on It
  • What Are Your Personal Minimums?
  • Are they written down?
  • Realistically estimate your skills, then ROUND DOWN
  • One , very experienced pilot she interviewed has this personal fuel minimum,
  • “I will only land with an hour and a half of fuel.”
  • Maintain Perspective
  • “As PIC the goal is that every action in the airplane is performed with forethought and intentionality.”
