December blew in briskly, full of activity and cheer. Thank you to Susan and Erik Steeb for opening their home for our Holiday Party. We had a wonderful group of friends and family to share delicious food, inspiring conversation, and a lively aviation inspired white elephant gift exchange.
Saturday, 17 of us gathered at the Spirit of San Luis restaurant for breakfast, visiting, and preparing“Thank You” cookie trays for delivery to the Tower, CalFire, ACI Jet, SunWest, San Luis Obispo County Airport Office, and our hosts at The Spirit. We enjoyed our first Tower Tour in several years, with our young ATC team as our hosts. Julia, our favorite female tower voice answered our questions while Nikko managed the busy air traffic. It was a fun day for all who participated and wonderful to be able to thank those around us that support our flying activities and help to keep us safe.
As I reminisce on all that the SLO 99s have accomplished, shared, and experienced this year, I am awed by the generosity, knowledge and stamina of our members. We have:
Awarded $5,000 in scholarships
Participated in 2 Cal Poly Aviation Club Airport Days
Helped with Salute to Veterans and Toys for Tots at Oceano Airport
Sent delegates to the Southwest Section Winter Workshop, Spring Meeting, Fall Meeting, and the International Meeting
Hosted a booth at the Central Coast Airfest in Santa Maria
Flown out to: Camarillo, Santa Ynez, Monterey, Halter Ranch, and New Cuyama
Hosted Cal Poly students who presented the Aerodynamics of Flight workshop as a scholarship fundraiser
Booths at the Civil Air Patrol events
Airplane display and table at the Paso Robles Airport 50th Anniversary Celebration
Participated in EAA WomenVenture at Oshkosh, followed-up by a presentation to our local EAA about the experience
Our final official activity of the year will be a fly-out to Paso Robles for lunch at the One-Niner Diner on December 16th. I hope you will be able to join us!
It’s hard to believe that another year has flown by! And there’s nowhere I’d rather be than flying.
We’ll kick off 2024 with our January meeting, Wednesday, January 3, at ACI Jet.

If we are grounded by weather here, we will plan to meet that day and support our own Spirit of San Luis.
