Product Hunt Radio is a podcast highlighting what's new and interested in tech with the people shaping the future.

Every week Ryan is joined by 1-3 guests, including founders, venture capitalists, journalists, and makers. As a community-driven platform, the podcast will be participatory, giving the Product Hunt audience an opportunity to call in, livestream the recording, and other interactive elements to shape the conversation.

Goals

To be explicit, here's why we want to do this:

  1. Deepen our Relationship with the Community. Podcasts have the ability to feel personal and allow us to engage with the Product Hunt community in a different and unique way.

  1. Increase Brand Awareness. At scale, the podcast has the ability to reach people outside our existing community.

  1. Promote Internal Initiatives. Podcasts can be a great format to describe and sell things we're working on internally, such as Ship, Maker Goals, etc.

  1. Generate Revenue. A podcasts creates additional real estate for us to sell and opens up conversations to other advertising partners that are attracted to podcast advertising.

  1. Introduce Diverse Voices. The podcast is a great channel for us to highlight various people/makers in the tech industry and give them a platform to share their POV and ideas.

Content and Format

  • 1 episode/week
  • 25-35 minutes per episode
  • Ryan + 1-3 guests, recorded in-person
  • 2 ad breaks (intro and at the end)
  • Each guest prepares 2-3 products in mind that they want to discuss/share
  • End each episode with listener call-ins

Monetization

There are two primary monetization paths to explore:

  1. Ads β€” Host-read ads for relevant brands that we can endorse (e.g. AWS, Mailjet, Instacart)

  1. Subscription β€” Listeners subscribe to a monthly fee to support the podcast and get access to a livestream, ability to call into the show, credits shout out, and more

  1. Other ideas?

Distribution

How we'll get listeners and subscribers:

  • Internal Cross-Promotion – Promote in PH Newsletter, on site (add a sidebar with an embedded stream), Sip app, social, publish transcript on Medium.
  • Partner Cross-Promotion – Mutually cross-promote with relevant podcasts such as YC podcast, The Pitch, etc.
  • YouTube β€” Cross-post episodes on YouTube (use audio visualizer) and potentially break into clips
  • Giveaways – Give swag to random people that share the episode on Twitter
  • iTunes Promotion β€” Leverage our Apple connections
  • Medium β€” Can we do something with Medium's audio play?
  • Guest Promotion – Ask and make it easy for guests to promote the episode
  • Join other Podcasts β€” Do the dog and pony show – guest appear on other podcasts
