Community Platform and Hub model

This note outlines possible elements of a community platform and hub to support local social action. A similar model could work for a network, or consortium of networks aiming to support peer-to-peer collaboration.

It is very much thinking-in-progress. I'm using the quip.com system to develop these notes, which allows collaborative editing and commenting. If you like to join in, or have other queries, please get in touch. David Wilcox david@socialreporter.com

  • Games, apps and maps for the Commons- provides an outline of workshop games, mapping and an app that can be used in designing a hub and platform, and helping community connectors to choose the methods that they may use.
The ideas here, and in linked docs, are based on a two-year exploration of how make London a more networked city, and work undertaken with Drew Mackie and Barbara Brayshay in Thames Ward, Barking, and Clerkenwell, Islington.

In Clerkenwell we have develop also a demonstration of different types of mapping, around the idea of Clerkenwell Commons as an environment for conversation and collaboration. We've done a Google Earth flyover, story map, directory/gallery and slideshow using 360 photos. The focus there is on a heritage trail, but we could do the same thing for asset mapping.

This is a vision for a Hub and Community Platform. The concept was initially developed for a local programme where there are:
  • a well-resource local community organisation that could host the Hub
  • projects under development to promote and support connections in the community
  • other elements including plans for local discovery trails, events, mapping - as below

Main elements of the Hub and Platform

This is a long term vision for the Hub and Platform. It would be refined and tested through additional research, workshops, and a flexible development process. See numbered references below for links to other resources.

The hub
The Hub develops and manages the Community Platform (1) including maps, network building connectors, core communications and project support:
  • Geo and story maps show where local assets are located, and form the basis for physical and online trails (4)
  • Network maps show connections between people, groups, projects and assets - and connectors facilitate those (7)
  • Communications include a newsletter, blog, calendar, documentation, plus support for curation of stories and other media, and any network comms. (3)
  • Data for maps and comms is integrated so updating is easy
  • The Hub also provides resources and support for projects and ideas, and supports the connectors.

Projects and ideas
  • Current projects are supported by the community organisation
  • There are ways to propose more project ideas, and connect with others who may be interested
  • People can use the network map and other means to provide wants and offers.

Apps
  • One or more discovery and social action apps can interrogate the data about projects, local activities, groups, activities and and assets, and help people find opportunities and/or seek support.
  • The network map is available to those who are on the map, and may be to others if connections are agreed as public
  • The trail Story Maps are available through web and apps (4)

Trails
  • One or more discovery trails about the area show local heritage and assets (4)
  • Trails are marked physically, and also available online as story maps with associated media.

Events
  • The Hub organises workshops and larger events
  • Anyone can organise informal get togethers
  • A shared calendar shows what's happening in the area
