Overture 5, Master Volume Automation (with Vienna Ensemble Pro 6)

This is a quick overview on how my orchestral setup is built to manage master volume automation in Overture 5 with Vienna Ensemble Pro 6.

The template is based on a unique VEP6 instance. All instruments are loaded in this instance.

It’s important to know that I am not using the mixer of Overture. Volumes and panning, buses routing, extra effects (compression, reverb, eq, ...) all are added and adjusted in VEP, not in Overture. It gives me more flexibility, VEP being displayed all the time on my 2nd monitor, I can adjust settings on the go while I’m working on a score.

I made these choices according to my workflow preferences. This overview is not a recommandation on how you should configure and use Overture with Vienna Ensemble Pro.
This is just how I deal with these two programs after several tests.

Vienna Ensemble Pro template

My template in VEP looks like this:
  • Unique VEP instance for all instruments
  • One track = one instrument (solo and/or group)
  • One track = one VEP midi port, all midi channels, output to Master bus (or a dedicted bus for instrument group ( ie: a strings bus for violins/violas/celli/basses)
  • All buses output go to the Master Bus

Master Bus: output OUT 1 / OUT 2

I only use Master Bus as audio output.
I didn’t choose OUT 1 / OUT 2, OUT 3 / OUT 4, etc... as audio outputs for each track because using Master Bus gives me more flexibilty to insert new tracks where I want without breaking the logic of the audio output assignment order.

Exemple of a Kontakt instance for a clarinet track

Four instruments are loaded in the Kontakt instance

By default Clarinets a2 is used on midi channel 1, voice 1.
