Purpose 🎯

Opinion Pieces, Commentaries, and Blogs are an important of media writing. Through this assessment you will learn how complete research, critically think and engage with a subject matter, and write content in clear, logical, and convincing manner.  

Task Description ✏️

For your Opinion Piece, Commentary or Blog, you must: 
  • Use a clear first person narrative
  • Clearly defined your argument
  • Have a strong primary interview subject, conventionally this would be who the feature is about. NB you must have at least 1 interview subject but you can have more
  • Include a direct quote from the interview subject
  • Good use of detail and create a sense of place through words
  • Not have an spelling or grammar errors

Step 1: Task Understanding
To help you understand what you need to do for this task and how will be assessed, you must:
  • Read the Instructions and Checklist carefully

Step 2: Choose Topic
To help find a compelling topic, you should: 
  • Find a topic that relates to current events, trends or opinions of others 
  • Select a topic that you are passionate about (a strong opinion is a requirement)
  • Pick a topic that you know a lot of information about
  • Once selected, boil your argument down to its simplest form (1-2 sentences)

Step 3: Research Topic 
To help deepen your understanding of your topic: 
  • Start researching (on the internet, archives, conversations, etc)
  • TIP: the more factual your information the more convincing your argument

Step 4: Plan Piece
  • To help you plan, use this structure (adding dot points):
  • Headline: give your piece a title
  • Introduction: state your argument
  • Body: outline your arguing points with examples
  • Conclusion: sum up what you think should be done
