Opening a HX Effects for a LCD Scribble Strip Repair

Introduction

The following is what I did to repair the screen on my HX Effects, after unfortunately dropping it and causing the black strip to show up over half my top-center scribble strip LCD.

Noting that I am outside the warranty period, I decided to try the repair myself.

Get some parts

First, I ordered a replacement part on Full Compass for about $12 USD. It took about 2 weeks to arrive.

Prepare the space

  1. Set up an ESD mat and make sure I’m properly ready to handle electronics
  1. Pull out the unit:

Open it up

Open the side panels and back panel


Now remove the bottom panel:

Revealing the glorious insides…
Now remove the hot glue around the ribbon cable and pull it out.

You’ll want to unplug the power connector to the switch

Wiggle the top PCB free, revealing:

Now we free the bottom board by unscrewing the grounding screw on the bottom right corner, plus the screws on each of the bottom panel:


Now wiggle the bottom panel free:

With needle-nose pliers, remove the hot glue from the ribbon connector,
