Ideas for maps and media
The aim is to develop a Museum of the Streets for the Bartholomew Fair fairground area that enables residents, workers and visitors with different interests to explore the area in ways that suit them.

Here’s some ideas to explore for the Fair 2024 - and in between

The usual ways currently/soon to be available include:
  • Joining a tour organised by a City Guide
  • Using a self-guided tour in print or online
  • Using an existing general mapping app - e.g. Google or Apple
  • Using a general visitor app
  • Using the Corporation’s Destination City website or related apps

Background and context

The new, spectacular Bartholomew Fair programme aims to develop better wayfinding - and I’ve suggested that this could be done in ways that benefit all interests, all year. This note builds on those ideas and the original suggestion for re-staging Bartholomew Fair that was picked up by the City’s Destination City programme.

Why Museum of the Streets

Residents, Guides and historians can collaborate to curate and develop engaging content. Additional mapping and media apps can make this available in ways that offer a richer experience to visitors. The process builds relationships between official programmes, organisations and groups. It provides learning opportunities and ways to develop new skills. Original idea here.

Initial research

In order to demonstrate a Museum of the Streets which adds value to existing systems we need to:
  • Review in more detail what maps and guides are available already - as above - and how far those resources can be re-used.
  • Research and assemble media and content assets - including blog posts, articles, images, video etc. Again, we have to pay attention to conditions for re-use.
  • Research wayfinding tools and apps - see below
  • Review what mapping/media tools we have - including Panoee

Different approaches

Visitor guide
The former Culture Mile team developed a demonstration visitor guide. The site has gone, but here’s an archive version. Something similar might be developed by the BID - or may be covered by the Destination City website due to be launched mid-June.

Using Google maps

Visitors, residents and workers are all likely to be using Google maps for various purposes. We could build on that familiarity in two ways:
  • Improve the experience of using Google maps
  • Do that in a way that provides a basis for other maps and media

In order to develop the ideas below more fully, we could invent some user profiles. See p 32 in Look and Feel Strategy. These might be residents wanted to learn more about the neighbouhood, visitors with different interests, workers looking for entertainment,  businesses wishing to attract more custom. Links here on how to use.
