Europeana enables access to over 50 millions of books, paintings, films, museum objects and archival records, from 3,700 libraries  and museums throughout Europe.  Now with a beautiful redesigned interface and excellent search tools, including licence and copyright information.

Folger Shakespeare Image Collection a collection of images and artefacts provided by the Folger Shakespeare Library includes costumes, illustration printed pages and books. Unless noted  with specific restrictions Folger’s default licenses is CC BY-SA 4.0

Internet Archive The Internet Archive is an American nonprofit digital librarywith the stated mission of "universal access to all knowledge." It provides free public access to collections of digitized materials, including websites, software applications/games, music, movies/videos, moving images, and millions of books. In addition to its archiving function, the Archive is an activist organization, advocating a free and open Internet. As of February 2024, the Internet Archive holds more than 44 million print materials, 10.6 million videos, 1 million software programs, 15 million audio files, 4.8 million images, 255,000 concerts, and over 835 billion web pages in its Wayback Machine

Flickr the image hosting and sharing site currently has over 1.53 billion images that can be resused under the various Creative Commons and Public Domain licences. It includes assets provided by museums, galleries under the Flickr Commons initiative as well as resourcesfrom Scientific and official organisations.

Getty Trust Open Content Program Over 87,000 images from the Getty Museums, and Getty Research Institute, (Note! not to be confused with Getty Images, the commercial stock photography archive which is one of the most widely used source for news and public media images. 

Public Domain Review The Public Domain Review is dedicated to the exploration of curious and compelling works from the history of art, literature, and ideas – focusing on works now in the public domain. It covers a wide range of images, books, and films and covers the history of art, literature, and ideas  It also posts a regularly updated newsletter.

Open Culture brings together high-quality cultural & educational media for the worldwide lifelong learning community. It includes books, texts videos, images educational resources, online courses, e-books.

Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free encyclopedia, entirely edit by its users. It is the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet, and is named as one of the most popular websites in the world. It is owned and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization which operates on funds it receives from its annual fund drives and charitable donations.

Art for All a new organisation supporting UK cultural heritage institutions to open digital collections for unrestricted public reuse. It includes some detailed and very useful resources.

Open Knowledge Foundation  is a worldwide non-profit network whose mission is to ensure knowledge and information are open to all.

Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation operates and manages some of the largest collaboratively edited projects in the world, including Wikipedia and its host Wikimedia.  All their media assets are stored on Wikimedia Commons

Open Glam (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museum) is a global network committed to sharing cultural heritage and ensure access to resources in Museums and Galleries. Check for new resources, news and workshops.

The National Lottery Heritage fund’s default license is now  CC-BY 4.0, supporting more people to connect & engage with heritage.

Communia is a network of researchers and practitioners whose aim is to foster, strengthen and enrich the  value of Public Domain, especially in education.  

Directory of Open Access Journals is a community-curated online directory that indexes and provides access to high quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals.

Figshare  is a platform for sharing and accessing open academic research outputs as diagrams, data and presentations.  Higher education and academia.

Internet Archive Scholar a newly established service enabling one to search for research articles and scholarly documents. The collection spans from  eighteenth century journals through the latest Open Access journals.
