NOADM Spec
- The system MUST use one symbol per English phoneme, that is, be a phonemic system.
- A symbol MUST be one or two characters, for example, ⟨e⟩ and ⟨ee⟩.
- A character MUST be one of ⟨a⟩–⟨z⟩, ⟨A⟩, ⟨E⟩, ⟨I⟩, ⟨O⟩, ⟨U⟩, and ⟨'⟩, ⟨"⟩.
- The symbol SHOULD have the minimal editing distance between orthography among candidates. (v1.3)
- For example, ⟨oo⟩ is better than ⟨uw⟩ for |o͞o|.
- The symbol SHOULD NOT link to an orthography which has a different phoneme. For example,
- If ⟨u⟩ for |o͝o|, tour → to͝or → tur ⋯ turbo → ˈtərbō.
- If ⟨o⟩ for |ô|, ball → bôl → bol ⋯ bold → bōld.
- The symbols MAY pick from other respelling systems which are listed in Pronunciation respelling for English § Traditional respelling systems. (v1.3)
- For example, ⟨oo⟩ (v1.3), ⟨ur⟩ (v1.2), ⟨aw⟩ (v1.4), ⟨oh⟩ (v1.1), ⟨uh⟩ (v1.4), ⟨ah⟩ (v1.4).
- The symbols SHOULD be same or similar to NOAD, for example, ⟨a⟩, ⟨aa⟩, ⟨A⟩.
- The symbol SHOULD be the orthography which has that phoneme.
- The symbol MAY have one alternative. (v1.4)
