NOADM Spec
  1. The system MUST use one symbol per English phoneme, that is, be a phonemic system.
  1. A symbol MUST be one or two characters, for example, ⟨e⟩ and ⟨ee⟩.
  1. A character MUST be one of ⟨a⟩–⟨z⟩, ⟨A⟩, ⟨E⟩, ⟨I⟩, ⟨O⟩, ⟨U⟩, and ⟨'⟩, ⟨"⟩.
  1. The symbol SHOULD have the minimal editing distance between orthography among candidates. (v1.3)
  • For example, ⟨oo⟩ is better than ⟨uw⟩ for |o͞o|.
  1. The symbol SHOULD NOT link to an orthography which has a different phoneme. For example,
  1. If ⟨u⟩ for |o͝o|, tour → to͝or → tur ⋯ turbo → ˈtərbō.
  1. If ⟨o⟩ for |ô|, ball → bôl → bol ⋯ bold → bōld.
  1. The symbols MAY pick from other respelling systems which are listed in Pronunciation respelling for English § Traditional respelling systems. (v1.3)
  • For example, ⟨oo⟩ (v1.3), ⟨ur⟩ (v1.2), ⟨aw⟩ (v1.4), ⟨oh⟩ (v1.1), ⟨uh⟩ (v1.4), ⟨ah⟩ (v1.4).
  1. The symbols SHOULD be same or similar to NOAD, for example, ⟨a⟩, ⟨aa⟩, ⟨A⟩.
  1. The symbol SHOULD be the orthography which has that phoneme.
  1. The symbol MAY have one alternative. (v1.4)
