Museum of the Streets

These are initial notes for slides, a document. These will include images and links to live demonstrations.

The idea

The Museum of London is closing in December 2022 and moving to West Smithfield for 2026. Meanwhile, why not create a Museum of the Streets on its new doorstep? Use online maps, photos, video, augmented reality - with print and an information hub:
  • Past: Tell the story of Great St Barts and the Hospital at their 900th anniversary,  the Martyrs, the Market, Bartholomew Fair and more, including links to Clerkenwell.
  • Present: highlight local venues and attractions, quiet places, interesting walks
  • Future: report on plans for major developments, like the new Museum, Market move, and public realm improvements.
  • Make it a participatory learning project with residents, businesses and organisations. Explore what would work both for locals and for visitors in the Culture Mile BID.
  • Expand the Museum of the Streets into other parts of EC1, and develop a MotS model which could be used in other neighbourhoods and BIDs

Context

The Culture Mile BID ballot is being held in January. The BID could start from April 2023, supporting the second five year phase of Culture Mile. This diagram shows the elements.

Museum of the Streets could provide opportunities in each of the five development programmes, and demonstrate the Commitment to Communities highlighted in proposals:
“Collaboration sits at the heart of the BID model. Understanding the value that each member of our community can contribute to projects is vital. We want to harness the potential of all the communities that make up the Culture Mile area, unlocking new opportunities for all”.

The Inspiring Places section of the BID proposals says:
“Develop a Public Realm Vision for the area that maps public and private spaces and opportunities for activation and enhancement, building on the City of London Corporation’s Culture Mile Look & Feel Strategy of 2018” Extracts from the Look and Feel Strategy below.

The methods

We can build on work undertaken for the Exploring EC1 project, which has created a system of maps, data and information sheets. Further links below

Maps
  • From the air - a Google Earth flyover of the main sites. Here’s an example by Daniel Wilcox.
  • On the street - photographs in Historypin, and virtual tours like this one by London Metropolitan Archives

Walks
  • Guided walks around different themes, promoting City guides
  • How to create your own walk, using your phone

Content, media and data
Use the system described here, which includes information sheets on places, people, and themes linked to maps and walks
  • Add basic content to the maps and information sheets, and invite local or specialist contributions
  • Audio and video on maps, walks and sheets
  • Database holding/indexing the above

Explore the potential for a dedicated app. StreetMuseum was a ground-breaking app created by Museum of London in 2010 “a bid to put the collections of the museum where they belonged, on the streets of London”

A hub
  • Develop a virtual - and if possible physical - hub for the above

The new Museum

Include regular updates on the new museum site in West Smithfield
