Meeting #70, September 28th, 1pm PT
Michael De Caria
Francesco Luigi Giardiello
Jeffrey D Mathias
- Kevin Wheatley: Unfortunately Alex and Scott can't be here this week. Alex has something he will show next week. Francesco does have something he can show us.
Francesco showed a series of images taken with an ALEXA 35 and a RED KOMODO, lit with an Aputure RGBWW LED fixture and a "meeting light". These were monitored in SDR and 600 nit HDR, through a pair of LUTs created by Nick Shaw in Nuke, using Alex Fry's V16 CAM DRT. The DRT was left at default values, except the CAM used was changed to Hellwig 2022 with linear extension, and the LMS matrix was changed to the one proposed by Thomas Mansencal. It was subsequently noticed that the default value for highlight desat was 0.3, whereas a value of 1.3 would be needed to produce a closer match to the previous Candidate C. The LUTs were flattened transforms, going from camera log to display, and including the ACES 1.3 Reference Gamut Compression.
The images were not exposed with a meter, but rather set by eye to give a good visual match between the image on the HDR monitor and the actual scene. The scene contained two ColorChecker24 charts (one "Classic post 2015", and one of the new Calibrite editions) and a person for skintone reference.
The shots cycled through various lighting states, including highly saturated primary colors, and Francesco described his impression of the similarities and differences between what he saw in the scene and on the monitors.
Since it is not practical to transcribe all Francesco's observations, viewing the of the meeting is necessary.
