About Lychee

A Saudi startup that offers curated dessert dishes made by experienced chefs to be delivered to their customers.

Project Brief

Client approached me to do the following:
  • Conduct a usability evaluation
  • Improve the usability of the checkout process
  • Build a design system and update the app visual design
  • Design a simple responsive landing page with social media links

Approach

My approach consisted of the following steps:
  • Usability evaluation. At this step, I looked at confusing flows, important information that are missing from screens and common usability issues. I came up with a list of usability issues in each screen.
  • Defined major problems. In this step, I defined the high-severity of main usability issues. This helped me decide which problems or screen design to tackle.
  • Paper sketching for solutions. Usually this step includes looking at other apps in the region to see how they tackle the problem at hand.
  • Built mid-fidelity mockups of the checkout flow.
  • User testing with actual users. For time limit, I tested my designs with friends as a rough user test.
  • Refined mockups based on user testing feedback.
  • Moved to high-fidelity designs. This include making a UI library and actual designs that are final.

Deliverables

  • Exported designs to Zeplin app, so the developer has access to all assets and design specifications.

Challenges:

Delivery address picker

Problem
In the current app, address picker took small space in cart screen. So users have very small space to interact with the map to locate their address.

Also, when researching about this problem, I looked at several apps in the region. What I noticed is that in Saudi Arabia, users pick their address in a different way than in the US. They locate their address in map instead of typing their address. It’s rarely for a Saudi to know their exact address without the help of Google maps.

My solution
  • I moved the delivery picking functionality to have it’s own screen. The reason is to have the map take a large real estate on the screen, 50% of the screen, which makes it easy for users to locate their addresses on map.
  • I also added the ability to pick recent address or picking new addresses.
  • I added the functionality to be able to type your address. This takes into account users in Saudi who are starting to know their actual addresses.
