Kim’s notes on the Winter Residency
e've got a stellar line-up of guests, including:
  • Authors Sarah Weinman, Clive Thompson and Courtney Maum
  • Jane Friedman, who literally wrote the book—your textbook—on the business of publishing
  • Agents Chris Bucci, Joelle Delbourgo, Anjali Singh, Cherise Fisher and Michelle Tessler
  • Editors George Gibson, Amy Gash, John Glynn and Brenda Copeland
  • Booksellers Kevin Sampsell and ER Anderson
  • And our Why I Write guest: David Grann, author of Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, soon to be released as a motion picture starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, directed by Martin Scorsese
We'll be sending along bios for all guests in the next few weeks. (And thank you to Dean Jobb for connecting us with David Grann, and to Cooper Lee Bombardier for connecting us with the booksellers and winter term webinar speaker Melissa Febos).

A few notes:
  • The core of the residency day runs from noon to 4:45 pm Eastern time, Sunday Jan 8 to Friday, Jan 13. Coffee sessions at 11 am Eastern and evening sessions at 7 pm Eastern are all optional. The core lectures and evening readings will be recorded and posted to Brightspace. Your mentor sessions and coffee group sessions will not be recorded.
  • ONE TIMING EXCEPTION: PITCH DAY Pitch Day runs from 9 am Eastern to about 4 pm Eastern. You will each have two 15-minute appointments, which could be scheduled at any point within that window. If you are in the Central, Mountain or Pacific time zones, we will ensure that you are booked for your appointments no earlier than 9 am your local time. (If you will be outside of your normal time zone during the residency, please let me know so that I can take that into consideration.)
  • Jane Friedman's session will be on author websites—and she'd love to reference some of your websites. Yes, the session is titled "Author Websites: What you're doing wrong and how to fix it"--so she may point to things you could improve, or she may cite you for the things you're doing well. Want her to take a look at your site? Send me your website link and I will pass it along to her. Deadline: Nov. 30.
  • We will have two evenings of student readings. If you'd like to read, please contact your cohort director.
  • The Pitch Day schedule will be shared with you the week before the residency. We cannot accommodate requests to meet with specific panelists. However, if you have a conflict of interest (for instance, you already have an agent, so do not wish to meet with agents), please let me know.
