Essay Prep: Body Paragraphs

Purpose 🎯 

This task is designed to help you better understand the topic, strengthen your critical thinking, and your ability to translate that thinking into a persuasive written form.

Task Description ✏️ 

Building on the Essay Prep: Academic Sources and Essay Prep: Introduction tasks, you must: 
  • Prepare 3 body paragraphs that would form a part of a full essay response to the question asked in relation to the image you have chosen:
  • Be sure you have all the elements of an academic paragraph 
  • Ensure that your paragraphs are logically and consistent with your thesis statement 
  • Include relevant academic sources and correct referencing

Step 1: Task Understanding
  • Read the Instructions and Checklist carefully 
  • Read the Marking Rubric carefully
  • Copy + paste your introductory paragraph into Cadmus — you will build on it through this task 

Step 2: Plan Body
  • Use this structure to help you plan your Body (using dot points):
  • Body Paragraphs: this is where you develop your argument and analysis. Add a paragraph for each main idea or theme, including:
  • Topic sentence stating the main theme or idea
  • Sentences elaborating on each theme or idea with supporting evidence and examples 
  • Tip: your Essay’s argument will emerge from and demonstrates your critical reading and needs to incorporate evidence from your readings. 
  • Concluding sentence summarising the points, linking to the next paragraph/argument
  • Reference List: 
  • Include a list of all references you cited

Step 3: First Draft
  • Building on your plan/dot points write your first draft, focusing on the structure
  • Once finished, use this Editing Checklist to review your Body Paragraphs:

  • Does each paragraph have one main idea or theme?
  • Do all the sentences contribute to the main idea or theme?
  • Are the points you make in a logical order? 
  • Do the paragraphs connect with each other? 
  • Is your argument consistent?Â
