Getting Started

Why Do We Edit?

Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. Content is skewed by this lack of representation. Check out this video on the wikipedia Gender Gap for more information. For more information check out, Statistics about women in the arts, from the National Museum of Women in the Arts and this New York Times Article on the Gender Gap

First Things First

Start by creating an account at Wikipedia. Many people on Wikipedia use pseudonym. Here are a few of ours: _______, __________, __________. Check out our video on user pages and sandboxes for more information.

Tell Wikipedians Who You Are

By including a little information on your user page about who you are and why you edit, you’ll be more likely to be seen as a serious and active contributor to the Wikipedia community. Sharing something about what you do, where you’re from, or what you find important are all great places to start.

Start Small

Once you have your profile set up your ready to start editing. Prevent getting overwhelmed by working on specific citations or corrections, rather than creating a whole new page from scrap. Here are our videos on creating citations and basic page anatomy.

Here’s a list of articles that need work.

Fill in the Gaps

There are many ways to meaningfully contribute to the Wikipedia network. One way is to amend content that has already been posted on Wikipedia. Check out our videos Adding Images to Articles & Adding Infoboxes to find another way to meaningfully contribute.

Create a New Article

If you’re ready to create a new article, watch our video Creating New Articles. Make sure what you choose to post won’t get taken down by checking the Notability and Citation Guidelines and Wikipedia Commons Etiquette.
