A spring partnership between Collage Dance Collective and the School of Dance fully blooms later this month

The School of Dance and UtahPresents have had the pleasure to welcome the dancers from Collage Dance Collective along with Artistic Director Kevin Thomas to Salt Lake City and the Marriott Center for Dance. The artists have been busy with master classes, community classes, and preparing to take the stage in performance on March 24th and 25th.

“Ballet made utterly, gorgeously human” (Times Union), Collage Dance Collective captivates in its twelfth highly anticipated performance season. The international touring company makes its UtahPresents debut with a roster of virtuosic BIPOC dancers who embody the essence of one of the nation’s fastest growing dance companies and earn the bold acclaim “relevant, relatable and rooted” (Pointe Magazine).

In its first Salt Lake City performance, Collage Dance Collective is set to showcase a diverse range of world-class dance carefully selected to embrace the moment and invite audiences to “witness hope take human form” (High Ground News).

School of Dance MFA candidate Kellie St. Pierre’s piece “The Rate We Change” was first selected for the ACDA Gala performance last week (a high honor). It was then selected to be performed at the National College Dance Festival Gala later this year in Long Beach, CA. Congratulations to Kellie and her cast! 👏

Yes! I just checked the ACDA website & it’s called the “National College Dance Festival”. The Gala performances will be held at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach, CA May 26-28.

Guest choreographer Suzanne Haag created an exquisite design of patterns and precise movement that shifts and shapes much like a kaleidoscope. In her own words: “Ornament is a non-narrative ballet, and though there is no storyline, Fanny Mendelssohn’s emotional sound evokes relationships between the artists on the stage.”

“The title, Ornament, is taken from a quote about the sibling composers Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, spoken by their father: “Music will perhaps become his [i.e. Felix's] profession, while for you [Fanny] it can and must be only an ornament." Despite these harsh words, Fanny Mendelssohn’s music, much of which had originally been credited to her brother Felix, has been rediscovered to be appreciated by today’s audiences.”

“My hope is that this piece presents something beautiful, something seemingly ornamental, but that ultimately it gives the audience a sense of connection as heard through the music and seen through the artists’ relationships on stage.”
