Teaching Replacement Behavior

Response

Make sure he knows his schedule and add in something he enjoys to follow a difficult activity. Look at ways to make the activity more pleasant for him.

Teach him a positive way to escape an activity – asking for a break (with words or a break card) .

Plan out two things:
(1) How you will respond when the child does take part in the large group activity or uses his replacement behavior. Find some ways to reward his appropriate behavior.
(2) Think through how to respond when the crying and struggling happens – what each adult in the room will do when he does it. This could be to redirect/guide him to use his new escape replacement behavior and then allow him to escape the group.
