Prevention

Teaching Replacement Behavior

Response

Look at the activity to see if there is anything that could be changed to make the activity more pleasing to the child – could the music be changed, could he be allowed to do some movements that don’t require him to dance, could he be given an opportunity to choose the song?

Look at what behavior the child could use to get a break from the activity instead of crawling under the table, such as using an “I need a break” card or learning to tell the teacher when he needs some quiet time.

Plan out two things:
(1) How to respond when the child does take part in the large group activity or uses his replacement behavior - find some ways to reward his appropriate behavior.
(2) How to respond when the crawling under the table happens – what each adult in the room will do when he does it.  This could be to remind him of what he can earn if he remembers what he can do instead.
